“Resting Place for Blues Legend”
One of three (possibly four) Robert Johnson grave markers in Mississippi... Robert Johnson's grave is behind the Payne Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Quito, Mississippi. The stone was erected in 1991, though there is some dispute whether Johnson is buried here or in Morgan City.
Pictured is possibly the actual location of Johnson's grave. The Mount Zion church cemetery in Morgan City (as per Johnson's Death Certificate, the burial location listed as Zion Church) contains a cenotaph marker, NOT a grave stone (there are no birth or death dates), and was placed in front of the church so as to keep tourists from trampling other grave sites in the still active cemetery. The Payne Chapel site is a fraud concocted by cemetery owner Richard Johnson in an attempt at the time to cash in on Robert Johnson's legacy, the spurious marker resting by no coincidence in Johnson's family plot. The grave site in Greenwood, pictured, displays perhaps the most tasteless example of paternalistic avarice in American music history whereby a lawyer claiming to own all things Robert Johnson, with absolutely no connection to the man himself, had his own name engraved on the very headstone of the individual he parasitized.
