“One of Tennessee's newest parks”
South Cumberland State Park is a state park in middle Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau. The park is one of Tennessee's newer state parks. It is a collection of several areas in four counties. The Fiery Gizzard Trail connects Grundy Forest and Foster Falls. Hikers may observe nature, swim in Fiery Gizzard Creek and enjoy one of the nation’s most outstanding trails. The 12.5 mile trail is considered one of the top 25 hiking trails in the United States. Hikes can view spectacular rock formations, cascading streams, waterfalls, rocky gorges, panoramic overlooks and lush woodlands. Carter Natural Area is part of a unique 18,000-acre enclosed-valley sinkhole aptly named Lost Cove. South Cumberland State Park has two picnic pavilions for larger parties that can be reserved in advance. There are also eight other small picnic areas with grill located throughout the park. There are 110 backcountry campsites throughout the park. Fire rings and outhouses are located at each of the 14 fourteen designated camping areas. A permit is required for backcountry camping.
This is a beautiful big park system. I suggest going to the Visitors center for first time goers. It can be found be going South Cumberland State Park. The guide that I talked to was very friendly and helpful in giving me the best places to go to get the most out my trip. They also have several different maps for each of the areas and directions to the places from the center. There is a lot to do in this area and beautiful sceneries to see once you get there.
