“Sand dunes state park in west texas”
Things to enjoy: picnics, star gazing, sunrises, sunsets, quiet afternoons, animal tracking, hiking, bird watching,
What a cool place! It’s like being at the beach with giant sand dunes...and no water! We didn’t stay long but were pleasantly surprised that the sand wasn’t hot in mid-July for the dogs. We went right after they opened and it was great!
Ended up here on accident on a long road trip. The campsite I'd planned to use in Guadalupe Mountains Nat'l Park was full. The campsite is well maintained and includes showers which was incredibly welcome after such a long camping trip.
The visitor's center has snow discs you can rent to go sliding down the dunes. Gives you an opportunity to let out your inner child! There's also a great deal of wildlife tracks out in the dunes if you look for them with birds, raccoons, kangaroo rats and fox tracks to name a few. Overall, a pretty good time.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU VENTURE OUT ONTO THE DUNES IN THE SPECIAL LEVEL OF HELL THAT IS TEXAS SUMMER
GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!!
(Good photo opportunities for those with feet made of steel)
This was a great find with hookups and easy pull through for our 5th wheel
The cute walk was nice but the person in charge was rude and they weren’t renting any sleds.
Rally cool place to stop off and get pictures for a half hour or so if you get the chance!
Loved this place. Stopped on the way back from Marfa and it was one of my favorite detours. It's almost like you are in the Sahara. Take your shoes off and go for a stroll. Gorgeous, so random and cool, and great picture taking. If you can, bring a sled. Seriously. It's like snow. There were a couple kids with sleds there going down various dunes it made me a bit jealous to watch. Like others have said - be sure to stop by the office at the entrance and pay (I think it's only a $4 entrance fee). I kept on expecting a booth and maybe gate - when I didn't see one, I thought, cool it's free. Nope. Got a notice to stop by the office and then long lectures from a park ranger and the lady manning the counter.
The sandhills were more impressive than I thought. It seemed like they would never end. Make sure you stop at the front office to register your car. We didn't see the sign and got ticketed.
