Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on August 05, 2020We really love it here! We were able to visit again (last time we came was October 2016). This time we brought our friends from Hebards Travels and it made our trip that much better!
We had a phenomenal time watching the sunsets from the beach, kayaking, swimming and relaxing!
We work from the road and our internet with Viaero and AT&T was great!
Hebards travels did a great video you can check it out: https://youtu.be/CqLEGVH-eak
We love how much room there is even for larger rigs!
FYI Both Experiences we have had a whole lot of flies come into our RV (come prepared lol)
There are dumpsters which is super convenient and primitive restrooms if needed.

Arrived from out of state at dusk. Signs said state pass, hunting or fishing license, or permit required. No self registration but phone number provided for permit. Called - they were unaware Prewitt even existed. 13 minutes later they gave me another phone number - local office. Recorded message said office closed, hoped to open this fall. There might have been some facility at the north area, but considering the hour we just dropped anchor for the night. We left early to the sound of thunder in the morning.

Other than WalMart overnights, we have never boondocked before. We found this spot and decided to give it a try. We pulled in on a Sunday evening and found a spot under some trees with a view of the water. Super easy to get a big rig here. We are in a 41.5 Ft fiver toyhauler.
There are toilets if you need them but they are primitive and pretty full of gnats. Big dumpsters located throughout. The lake is really low bc of drought and quite merkey but we have still enjoyed the views and a few rides out on our Stand Up Paddle-boards.
Great Verizon LTE here. We work from the road and have no problem using our hotspot. We are one of about 3 rvs in the entire place (that supposedly fits 250!) Great privacy and beautiful views...it’s like a little oasis in the middle of prairie.
Will definitely be coming back here if ever in the area!

Drove in on a somewhat washboard gravel road. Not too bad. Easy finding a spot next to the shore. Setup and took my chair on the beach. Watched the pelicans. Very peaceful during the week. Bet it gets crowded on the weekend. Stayed 10/2/18...

This was a great boondocking spot. The only issue I want to caution people on is the amount of burs and goat heads we encountered. Having two dogs with long hair this was a constant battle. I'm not sure if it was only at the spot we were located at (I'm assuming probably not) but this was a setback we constantly had to deal with not to mention painful for our pups. It would probably help to have dogs wearing booties so they are more protected.

You drive in on a washboard road but it isn’t too long so it could be worse. There’s tons of spots to pick from and lots right on the water. It really is like a little beach in Colorado. It got pretty windy at times though. There is a vault toilet and a dumpster to dump your trash. Other than that, not much else. Beautiful camping spot to spend a few days.

Pros:
•Easy to find
•The lake is beautiful
•Birds everywhere - there was a large flock of pelicans on the lake that were fun to watch
•Walmart is just 30 minutes away (this fact became important, read on)
Cons:
•You must have a permit to access property. We went to the closest Walmart and got an out of state one day fishing license for $17.
•There are a lot of people and rigs here, some of which look like they call it home. Dogs barking, generators running, people yelling at the dogs barking, local teenagers stopped through to swim in the lake, make out, yell profanities at each other. The teens thing probably wouldn’t have been mentioned but they parked at the campsite next to us and their behavior bothered my nine year old daughter so much she wanted to leave.
•The campsites are more like wide spots on the road so unless you get a site at the very end of the road, traffic coming and going is an issue.
•The pit toilet was disgusting. Unusable really. We chose to use our backup relief methods.
•There was a funky smell. Might have been the flock of pelicans. We were downwind from the large flock.
• Bugs - gnats, mosquitoes, flies, ticks - bring the spray.
It was an okay night. The permit thing was a little bit of a surprise to me because, although there is another review that mentions it, that review was further down in the list and I didn’t see it until I was already having to figure it out.

I love this lake until July and then there are dead fish everywhere. Must have a fishing license.
I stayed here in late June but unfortunately I wasn’t feeling well during the time that I was there so I wasn’t able to fully appreciate the area or even go fishing. There are probably 100 or more places where you can camp around this lake and it was extremely crowded when I was there but fortunately I arrived at a good time and was able to get a good site near the water. There were some flies and mosquitoes but nothing unusual. And yes, you do need a Colorado fishing or hunting license to access this area along with a Colorado state parks pass according to the wildlife officer that I spoke to when I first arrived. I believe that is a new rule that is just now going into effect for the state wildlife areas, also known as SWA’s, in Colorado. I did not experience any issues with my dog running around through the sage brush as another reviewer had mentioned. Perhaps I was there at a different time of the year. One interesting thing to note is that right before dark on the first day I arrived I was outside and there were toads all over the place. Apparently they bury themselves in the sand during the hot day and then come out in the evening to forage for food. It was rather funny and my dog enjoyed chasing them. They were not a nuisance of any kind.
