“The most popular campground”
Currently open for dry camping only. The most popular campground on the unit. Located on the Upper McCloud river at an elevation of 3400 feet, it has 39 sites with tables, fire-rings, vault toilets, and piped drinking water. Suitable for tents and mid-sized RV's or trailers. 14 day limit. $15 per night. No reservations. Features: This campground is situated near three waterfalls on the river, which adds to its popularity. The McCloud Falls vary in height from 15 to 50 feet. A river-side trail from the campground provides access to the falls. It is approximately three miles round trip to see all three. Swimming and fishing are other popular activities. This section of river has no special restrictions for fishing. The McCloud River Loop, a paved road approx 10 miles in length provides access to the Middle Falls and Upper Falls parking lots and overlooks if you do not wish to hike the trail. From the McCloud Ranger Station, turn left on SR 89. Go 5 miles and look for a sign on the left side of the highway for Fowlers Campground/Lower Falls. Turn right at the sign and go approximately 1 mile. At the fork, go left into the Fowlers Campground.

So here's the thing, I only actually saw one of the three waterfalls. And it was beautiful. A rushing creek spraying smallish whitewater over a stone bank, Doug-firs looming above, a lookout tower providing a great view but immediate access to the 20-footer of a waterfall and the imminent sound of absolute peace everywhere.
That said, I suppose the other two waterfalls could have been horrible. Maybe there water falls up? I don't know, can't say, didn't see them.
Instead, I was forced to work for a living while the vacationers all sat around like fat cats drinking their fancy Aquafinas and wearing no shoes well into the afternoon.
Meanwhile, I was forced to endure the luxury of having a campsite larger than most suburban yards. I toiled endlessly as knobby firs cast their shade down upon my laptop screen, unable to find the need to squint in the break from the gorgeous sunshining-all-the-day-long. To make things worse, there I was on break, zooming around the B-loop on my bicycle while my children tried desperately to beat me at a race. Never let your children beat you at anything, they'll just end up turning into leftist, t-shirt wearing treesmoochers.
So as the wifi poured in adequately enough to work away most of my web designing days and support not one, but one plus one different attempts to watch television quite successfully via illegal streaming sites, I endured the warm afternoons, the quiet nights. If that wasn't bad enough, imagine my disdain at the massive piles of free wood stacked about my site! Can't a man even pay $7 for three logs anymore? So there we were, ready and able to have as much free fire as we'd like any night we chose.
Like cavemen, thrust a million years back into some pre-Genesis utopia where life was cheap and easy enough.
Sarcasm aside, I was rather bummed that you couldn't see Mt. Shasta from the campground, more so as she teased us, nearly always blasting snow capped and jagged in the windshield of our van as we made our way here from Lassen.
My youngest son even drew a picture of a mountain with wheels. Would that really be so hard?

This might be my favorite camping spot ever. What a jewel. We heard that it was popular and busy but we were lucky enough to find a site on Loop A, right next to the trail to the Lower Falls. It was so much fun to get set up and run down to the falls to see what was going on. No disappointing there as the falls were spectacular, kids were jumping off a platform into the water below, it was a good time. We then walked to the Middle Falls, which were like a dream. The Upper Falls are a clamor up a steep hill from the Middle Falls so we chose to wait to drive up there when we were leaving.
I wish we could've stayed longer and we'll definitely be back.

We loved this forest campground and are so happy we made the detour out here. One night slowly turned into 6 as we delayed our departure to enjoy more time here.
With 8 first come sights we arrived on a Tuesday and hoped to have a little choice for something that would fit our rig (Campground is for 30' and under and we are a tad over that at 31' Class A). While the trees are thick and the turns are tight we did acquire a few new pinstripes and made it to Sight 11.
This is a nice sight that sits back from the river and is relatively isolated. With a little bit of sun, we could use the solar panels for part of the day. Each site is paved, has a fire ring and picnic table. Surrounding the sight is dense shrubs. While we liked the site, the next day Site 3 opened up on the river.... and we decided to move.
Sight 3 backs up to a river - it is high bank cliff, but if you put your windows on the river side, you will have a view of the rapids and the beautiful sound of the river to lull you to sleep. There is a relatively busy footpath behind you between the site and the river with frequent walking traffic. We found the river view/sound to be worth the small intrusion.
The campground sits just 1/2 mile from Lower Falls on McCloud River. A beautiful fall that you can almost walk right up to. Lots of fisherman and a wonderful walk goes to the falls and then below for about 2 miles until it meets up with Hearst property. Going the other direction takes you to Middle Falls, Upper Falls and a swimming hole. The hike is relatively flat and beautiful. Busy on the weekends and enjoyable midweek.
The town of McCloud is as cute as can be. Be sure to go for breakfast at White Mountain Cafe and the shakes at Floyds are worth the 5 mile trip from camp! This old mill town was private until 1962 and has some great photography locations and fun history. You can even bike in on the old rail trail that goes all the way to Burney.
The only negative is the size restrictions - they are real. For bigger rigs try Cattle Camp or the RV park in McCloud.
We found fishing, hiking and Mt. Biking on Mt. Shasta to be equally fun. Lots of spring skiing on Mt. Shasta taking place on the weekends.

We had a wonderful experience here. Deer frequent the area every day, which is so fun to watch. Lower McCloud Falls is probably about 1/4 mile away and Middle Falls was about 3/4 mile from our site. It is a bit isolated, but McCloud is 10-15 minutes away and Mt. Shasta was 20 minutes without construction traffic. Camp Host was nice and friendly. Internet was not so great, only because it kept going out. But we do not have an antenna yet, so maybe if you have one you may have better luck.

Another great campground I found on campendium. We got lucky and got what I think is the nicest site at this park 8A. Drove in at 9:30 AM on Thursday and got one of only two first come sites open 8A. Next time I will reserve a site. Sites are large and the river is just a short hike away. The 3 falls are beautiful. Lots of swimming holes. Fishing is better outside the park up or down stream.

Stayed here May 31~2, 2022 while supporting a PCT hiker through the section. Well kept campground in the trees yet enough sunlight to charge solar. My site looked out over the McCloud River with trails to the Middle Falls and Lower Falls and great swimming holes. Saw plenty of folks walking the trails with fishing rods and camera tripods. There are no hookups here, dump toilets, water spigots, and trash dumpsters. There was a camp host on site. It would be prudent to make reservations in advance at Recreation.gov. would definitely stay here again if visiting the area.
