A police officer suggested this location. He said once I saw the reservoir, look for a big sign, and make the turn in. He didn't say anything about the earthen dam. There was a lot of cattle when I pulled in, as you are in a free range area.
Make sure you drive across the dam. It'll get your heart pumping, but once you're on the other side, you'll find more camping space than you can shake a stick at. And there are no cows on that side.
If you've got fishing gear, you can fish the reservoir.
Great spot. Very quiet, and peaceful

I did not camp because of the low water left. I still think global warming has to do with the drastically reduced water level. This is a giant water reservoir. How else would it lose a lot of water? There were herds of cows and deer on the reservoir! At least the local I spoke to caught a big fish in the now shallow reservoir.

If global warming will not end, please God help us all.

I saw no other way to go except across the earthen dam. It's not too bad. Just pay attention for big holes or sharp rocks. There were a lot of cows. Across the dam there is a few spots down by the water's edge. The lake is really receded but it's still nice. Lot's of geese and other water birds.

No one else was there but on a couple late, late nights, a couple vehicles pulled up on the dam and did some night fishing. Also, the first couple days my RV was attacked by yellow jackets. Really big yellow jackets.

Beautiful nights.

Great place to be alone and dry camp.

Once I was across the dam and went down by the lake, the dam blocked all my cell service data. I had voice only, one bar. I could climb the rocks to the dam road above and get 4G Verizon from there but not at my campsite.

I drove by here today planning to boondock for the night. Unfortunately, It didn't seem very accessible, and it has recently rained. I have a 21' C with a tow dolly and car. I just didn't want to risk turning off onto the dirt road, into the reservoir, and across the top of the damn for fear of getting stuck. Roaming Verizon service. It may be suitable for Vans and 4x4 vehicles, but I wouldn't bring a large RV out here. No place to turn around in the area, either. If you're into guns, the NRA Whittington center isn't far from here, and it was in a really nice location. I decided to head for Raton, and I'm staying at the Willow Springs RV Park for the night. Tried to do Sugarite Canyon, but the RV spots were booked up. The road up there is narrow, and turnaround is tough there, too. Again, probably suitable for small camp vehicles and tents. Looks like a nice park, though.

We stayed here at the beginning of August. We planned to stay at the wildlife refuge but the water was SO low there and there was someone else camping. We have dogs so we prefer to be alone if possible. After driving down the road to this area we decided to move and are glad we did. The night was so beautiful the dogs were able to enjoy the water. Is we drove around the entire reservoir. Also go down the highway to visit the bar at cold beer New Mexico. They were very accommodating and allowed us to take our dogs in and even let us fill up some jugs with water. We would definitely stay here again.
