“Camp on a meandering creek”
Sherwin Creek Campground is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains within 2 miles of the full-service community of Mammoth Lakes, California. Popular among anglers, hikers, off-road vehicle enthusiasts and photographers, the campground is near some of the most spectacular wilderness and outdoor recreation areas in the Sierras. This large campground has campsites organized into three loops, all within walking distance of the creek. Several tent-only, walk-to sites make up another loop in a secluded area on either side of the creek. Sites have a native surface and plenty of shade.

Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on July 06, 2020The campground is fairly nice. Sites differ quite a bit based on where you are in the campground. There is quite a bit of OHV traffic up and down the campground roads, which mixed with the silty dirt makes for some dust. We were there in late September and the creek was still running pretty well. You're only a couple of miles from Mammoth Lakes Village but you'd never know it.

Very nice campground at a great location around many of the area trails. Site 32 was ideally located near the camp host, vaulted toilets, and the campground entrance. The site was level, quiet, and had plenty of room. The camp host, Tony, was very helpful. There is some OHV traffic, but nothing that degraded our trip. We encountered a bear in our campsite on the second night of our stay and another one was roaming around when we departed mid morning. There’s no RV dump so on our way back home we stopped by Old Shady Rest Campground and used their dump with a $10 fee.
Bottom line, the camp exceeded our expectations. We’re looking forward to coming back again.

A resident bear looking for a snack tried to get into our rig during the night through an open window. Lock up your food. Lovely wooded surroundings and wildlife. Some noisy neighbors at night after quiet hours.

This campground is surprisingly close to Mammoth, in the trees. You have to drive through town to get here which feels a bit strange. The sites are silty dirt and when the wind blows, the dirt gets everywhere. The sites range from flat to a bit uneven. There is a bit of OHV traffic and the noise can be deafening. I read that there is a motocross event in June each year so I imagine that attracts enthusiasts.
There is a nice hike up to Sherwin Lakes but no easy way to start from the campground (we tried). We ended up walking along the road about a mile which wasn't bad. Google Maps showed a path but it seems to go through a private camp.
The camp host was friendly and worked very hard to keep the bathrooms clean. He even scrubbed the big garbage bin very thoroughly and generally kept an eye on things.
The view driving into the campground are very nice, but no view from the campground itself.
There are plenty of water spigots, no dump. We found the dump at the Water District facility very convenient at $10. No one else was there the 2 times we used it.

We enjoyed this campground. We got a site close to the river, so bugs weren’t much of an issue.
Almost none of the sites are level, so be prepared for that.
Lots of people riding dune buggies around in the area, which kicks up a lot of dirt.
Not sure if there was some specific dune buggy event, or if this specific campground is just where they all like to stay due to the access to the dirt roads.
Camp hosts were very nice and helpful. We’d definitely stay here again.
