โ€œone of Macon's most noticeable landmarksโ€

Among the vast southern heritage and rich music history, the Rookery is one of Macon's most noticeable landmarks. Located in the geographical center of downtown Macon, the Rookery has been a gathering place since Jimmy Carter ascended the White House and Capricorn Records was a world known hit maker. With its large patio extending into Cherry Street, locals and tourists alike have made the eatery and bar a home for relaxation and good fare. Sit at the bar and experience Eddie Hinton's Extremely Dangerous Cocktail during happy hour. Listen to local and regional musicians at one of the Rookery's quaint stages. The Rookery is the home of Bragg Jam, Macon's largest and most eclectic music festival. The Rookery is also the home of the Allman Burger, the Big "O", and the Gram Parson's Cosmic Club. It should be your home, too.

I am shocked this place has a good rating! I wanted to like it because of it's high rating. My husband travels for his job, and we check this and another travel site before deciding where to eat. This is one of the few times I think they got it wrong. I was going to give it a higher rating, but I feel I have to be honest with my experience. I'd like to think our negative experience was because we got takeout and didn't dine inside the restaurant. I tried to call our takeout order in for lunch before heading to the restaurant, but the lady on the phone said you had to come inside the restaurant to place your order. That was an inconvenience because we had to wait around for the order which wasted our time. Had we been able to pre-order/call ahead, (like most places do,) we could have saved some time. We also went on a Sunday afternoon so the church crowd from the church beside it took a lot of the parking spots. I had to park farther away and walk, which took some more time. If it was great food, those things might not have bothered us, but the food was so bad, and it just didn't taste good. My fingers were so greasy after eating the food that I had to wash them more than once. Even Five Guys burgers are not this greasy, and they taste so much better! We ended up throwing over half of our food away, which I hate to waste food. It upset our stomachs so much that we didn't want to get anything to replace it. The milk shakes didn't have a strong flavor. We got the Georgia Peach, (which tasted more like a vanilla,) and the Jimmy Carter, (which I could taste no peanut butter in.) We got the pimento cheese appetizer on crustini, and it was shredded cheddar cheese mostly, and you couldn't hardly taste any pimento. The chicken salad on crustini was the best thing of the food we had, and it's the only thing I would order if I had to go back to this place. I had the burger with the fried green tomato, but there was no breading on the tomato, and it was soggy so I removed it and didn't eat it. It was not good flavors, and I was just disappointed. My husband got the O burger, and he said it was okay but the burger was too greasy. I do not recommend this place and I would not return.
