Listed on the top five "must do's" during your Ludington vacation.. a walk out to Ludington North Breakwater Light. Located in Stearns' Park, enjoy a half-mile walk on the breakwall to the 57 foot high tower. This is a great spot to catch a fish or a sunset! Open to the public Wed to Sun from 10am to 5pm with a small admission fee. In 1870, Congress appropriated $6,000 to build a lighthouse on the south side of the Ludington Harbor. It was first lit in 1871. In 1924, the present structure was built on the north side of the harbor. The light is a square pyramidal building, steel framed and encased in riveted steel plates. The tower shines 19 miles out on Lake Michigan.
