“Louisville's Most Historic Inn”
We invite you to come and stay at The Samuel Culbertson Mansion historic bed and breakfast inn on your next visit to Louisville. This Georgian Revival mansion is located in the heart of the Old Louisville National Historic District, near downtown Louisville, the University of Louisville and Churchill Downs. Pamper yourself with the opulence of the Gilded Age, and enjoy a piece of traditional Kentucky in this former home of a President of Churchill Downs and the "Two Little Knights of Kentucky". In March 1896, the local newspapers announced that Samuel Alexander Culbertson, son of Indiana's wealthiest man, William Stewart Culbertson, a dry goods, railroad, utilities and banking tycoon, had purchased land on Third Avenue, the most fashionable street in Louisville, to build his new home. After barely a year of construction, the mansion was completed in 1897 just in time to receive guests for the 23rd running of the Kentucky Derby. And for the next half century the Kentucky Derby was to be the focus of Culbertson's life and this house. Samuel's boyhood home just across the river in New Albany is a pretentious French Empire style mansion built in 1867. It is now a museum. Next door to that is a mansion given to Samuel and his new wife Louise as a wedding present by his father in 1886. William Culbertson was totally and unconditionally opposed to gambling in any form, and even disinherited one of Samuel's brothers for betting on horses. Young Samuel, however, loved the races too, though in secret, and had to wait until his father's passing to move nearer the venue that would eventually put him into the pages of history.
Reviews
Wow! Just wow! If your niche is gorgeous historical mansions ,a taste of history and you want to spend the night there too!! This is your spot and we will be back! Jason, our host met us at the door, was so warm and welcoming. He is proud of this home and loves people who also share the joys of gorgeous antiques and shares his knowledge of items you may have never seen before. Our suite was fabulous and very relaxing. Jason made us a lovely breakfast in the morning. Truly could have stayed all day. Thank you Jason for a this treasure of a place to stay in Louisville!
We were greeted by a charming gentleman (Jeremy I believe) who told us the house rules and how to let ourselves in/out.
We stayed in the Annie Fellows room.
The bed was rather comfortable and firm. If your expecting to stay in and watch tv this room isn't for you-- it's a very small tv (which was fine with us!)
The room was very large and gave us ample place to put our things and not feel cramped.
The bathtub didn't have a cover/plug for the tub so using a rag to cover the hole was sufficient.
Do use the bath salts they smell and feel great in a hot bath!
Breakfast was hands down amazing!
Juice, coffee, fruit and mini muffins/cinnamon rolls as well as a hot entree.
Parking is on the street but the area is clearly well kept up and very safe!
We will stay again if in the area.
