“a spiritual oasis in the middle of the city”
The gracious Italian Renaissance mansion was built between 1910-1914 for Secundo Guasti, who owned the world's largest winery at the time. In 1937, Busby Berkeley, the famous Hollywood director and choreographer, bought the Guasti Villa and resided there, adding an additional touch of glamour to the property's history. For a time, it was a retirement home for physicians, who added the residential wings onto the building. In 1974, it was acquired by MSIA and used as an ashram for many years. As the property was cultivated with beautiful fountains and meditation gardens, it was opened to the public as a day retreat-- the Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens.
