“the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Los Angeles area”
Surrounded by 100 year-old palm trees, Home of Peace Memorial Park holds the proud distinction of being the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Los Angeles area. At the end of the 19th century, when the original site of the Hebrew Benevolent Society's sacred burial grounds filled to capacity, the society purchased a tract of land at the corner of Whittier Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. Between 1902 - 1910 using horse-drawn wagons, the community members worked tirelessly to relocate their honored ancestors from Chavez Ravine to their new resting places. The Home of Peace Chapel is an architectural treasure of Southern California. It makes possible a simple, sustaining, reverent ceremony all in one place and on hallowed ground. Among the memorials moved is the magnificent Jereslaw Angel. Nearly twenty feet tall, this hand-carved limestone statue has become a trademark of Home of Peace and its history. From Chavez Ravine to East Los Angeles, Home of Peace Memorial Park has served the Los Angeles Jewish Community. Home of Peace offers the choice of traditional ground burial, indoor or outdoor mausoleum crypts, mausoleum niches or urn garden burial spaces. For seven generations, Home of Peace has offered the best in traditional funeral services. In addition, Home of Peace is one of the last cemeteries in the area to offer choices of flat markers or stone upright monuments and ledgers.
