“who do you believe?”
The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is a nonprofit mental health watchdog, responsible for helping to enact more than 150 laws protecting individuals from abusive or coercive practices. CCHR has long fought to restore basic inalienable human rights to the field of mental health, including, but not limited to, full informed consent regarding the medical legitimacy of psychiatric diagnosis, the risks of psychiatric treatments, the right to all available medical alternatives and the right to refuse any treatment considered harmful.CCHR was co-founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus Dr. Thomas Szasz at a time when patients were being warehoused in institutions and stripped of all constitutional, civil and human rights.
CCHR functions solely as a mental health watchdog, working alongside many medical professionals including doctors, scientists, nurses and those few psychiatrists who have taken a stance against the biological/drug model of “disease” that is continually promoted by the psychiatric/pharmaceutical industry as a way to sell drugs. It is a nonpolitical, nonreligious, nonprofit organization dedicated solely to eradicating mental health abuse and enacting patient and consumer protections. CCHR’s Board of Advisers, called Commissioners, include doctors, scientists, psychologists, lawyers, legislators, educators, business professionals, artists and civil and human rights representatives.People frequently ask if CCHR is of the opinion that no one should ever take psychiatric drugs, but this website is not dedicated to opinion. It is dedicated to providing information that a multibillion dollar psycho/pharmaceutical industry does not want people to see or to know. The real question therefore is this: Do people have a right to have all the information about (A) the known risks of the drugs and/or treatment from unbiased, nonconflicted medical review, (B) the medical validity of the diagnosis for which drugs are being prescribed, (C) all nondrug options (essentially informed consent) and (D) the right to refuse any treatment they consider harmful.CCHR has worked for more than forty years for full informed consent in the field of mental health, and the right to all the information regarding psychiatric diagnoses and treatment, not just the information coming from those with a vested interest in keeping the public in the dark.
It is in this spirit that we present you with videos, blogs, news, medical experts and information designed to arm you with facts.
This is not a museum, this is a Scientology owned and operated propaganda building. Everything within, while having some element of truth in some cases, is manipulated to try to enhance the story that Scientology is a religion, and should be subscribed to by everyone. This "museum" should not be attended by anyone unless you're a Scientologist, or you hate Scientology and want to get riled up by their shameless self aggrandizement. Stay Away.
Okay, so this place is bizarre, but also one of the most memorable places I ever visited in Los Angeles. I cannot recommend it to most people, but if you are into exploring the funkier/off-the-beaten part of L.A. and have a high tolerance for the blatantly offensive, then I'd say you should consider dropping by this "museum." As mentioned above, the place is owned by the Church of Scientology and operates as a propaganda mill for their anti-psychiatry ideology. They show you a ridiculous video about the evils of psychiatric treatments, take you through a series of exhibits that suggest that things like the Holocaust, 9/11, and slavery were caused by psychiatrists, and then try and sign you up for "the cause." It's crude and offensive and made a friend of mine angrier than I had ever seen him.
That being said, this was one of the most offbeat, unique places I visited in L.A., the kind of weird location that I never would have gone to otherwise but that I'm glad I did, if only because I got to witness something that was literally incredible.
I went to this museum last summer. The guy from the front desk stood behind us and led us into every exhibit, never letting us out of his sight. There are a lot of pictures and videos of 1950s era lobotomies and medical experiments. Not for the squeamish! There are also a lot of bizarre exhibits blaming psychology for all the ills of the world including the holocaust. Another exhibit alleges that Osama Bin Ladin's top deputy in Al Qaeda was a trained psychologist (I checked into this claim, not true!!). As we were leaving we saw some guy sitting in the lobby reading the L. Ron Hubbard book "Dianetics" outloud, pretending to be oblivious that anyone was listening. If you want to see the extremely weird side of LA this is a definite must see. If you are in Hollywood looking for a couple hours to kill this is amazing free entertainment. Just make sure to hold your laughter until you safely leave the museum! This is the equivalent to a "gag gift" for Roadtrippers
