“pumpin iron”

The second most famous beachfront gym The Venice Beach “Weight Pen”, arrived in 1951. It was officially dedicated as “Muscle Beach Venice” by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks in 1987. The contemporary “Muscle Beach Venice,” which is host to physical fitness buffs and tourists alike, is located at the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks’ Venice Beach Recreation Center. Its title “Muscle Beach Venice” distinguishes it from its predecessor and the authentic “Muscle Beach,” just more than two miles north, where the location of the original Muscle Beach has been honored and memorialized with a contemporary refurbishment and landmark sign in Santa Monica (just south of the Santa Monica Pier).

Quite disappointing really. You associate Muscle Beach with pumped up bodybuilders pumping iron and flexing muscle but in reality it was a place surrounded by bums and with some people that didn't want to pay for the gym (most of them who were fat). Maybe it was just the wrong time of the year but I found it to be a complete let down.

Pretty dirty in my opinion. I did enjoy watching the skate boarders though. We ended up traveling north to Santa Monica where the equipment was nicer and the area was cleaner.

Great stop! Parking was over-priced but guy helped us get a spot where we could easily get out since we weren't going to be there long. It was close & not a long walk to the beach. The guy in the photo was there - working out. Friendly & offered to take photos with anyone who wanted to.

If you stumbled on this place, you've found a cultural icon. If you're searching for it though, I don't encourage friends to go out of their way for this. It's easy to stroll by it when you're doing Venice Beach the right way and check out the dudes / chicks using the facilities seriously. No seriously, they're serious. But if you're really going there to people watch for muscles, hit your nearest crossfit instead :)
