“Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright”
Aline Barnsdall's family built an empire from their endeavors in the oil industry, which allowed her the luxury of commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright to design this marvelous construction. The house embodies the recurring theme of Mayan Revivalism found in many of Wright's other projects - known for using large stones, introverted windows, courtyards, and ornately designed accompaniments. Water is meant to flow from a pool in the courtyard through an underground tunnel to this inside moat, and out again to a fountain. The Hollyhock plant is a repeating motif of the architecture and is used in many of the details around the property. Today, surrounded by a modern theater, galleries and studios, Hollyhock House comes closer than ever before to realizing its original purpose as the centerpiece of a functioning arts complex. Hollyhock House has been named one of the most significant structures of the 20th century by The American Institute of Architects and achieved National Historic Landmark recognition in 1997. The house attracts thousands of visitors annually, who come from around the world to acknowledge its place in the cultural and architectural history of Los Angeles. Public Tours of Hollyhock House are offered to the general public, reservations are not required.
