“the battle above the clouds”
Point Park is a ten acre memorial park that overlooks the Lookout Mountain Battlefield and the city of Chattanooga. There is a paved walking path around the park that takes visitors by several historic tablets, monuments. Confederate artillery positions, and scenic overlook. The largest monuments in Point Park is the New York Peace Memorial, which was erected by the state of New York as a tribute to peace and reconciliation between Union and Confederate veterans after the war. Inside Point Park, at the point of the mountain, is the Ochs Memorial Observatory. Inside are exhibits on Civil War signaling, photography, and Moccasin Bend, which is visible below the point. Admission to Point Park is $5 per adult aged 16 and over. Just outside of the park is a visitor center with exhibits on the Civil War campaign for Chattanooga, including a large painting "The Battle Above the Clouds."
Reviews
$5 each to come in, have quarters for parking, 15 minutes per quarter. Beautiful grounds, views and rocks, little museum could have more I think but as a natural attraction it's great. The views!
Well worth the stop! Pay to listen to the program- lots of Civil War history
$5 to enter (cash or card), plus you have to pony up for street parking (I paid a few bucks for that as well, again, cash or card). Really, not too bad.
This was a great quick stop, but I could have easily spent more time here as well. The views are just incredible, I caught that last bit of a talk with a ranger, the brochure was super informative, and there are some nice interpretive signs. I had actually just watched the parts of Ken Burns The Civil War about the Battles for Chattanooga before I came here, which was fascinating.
There's a little museum and a little like, NPS gift store right outside, but I think the museum was closed for the day, and it looked like the ice cream store attached was closed for the season.
Point Park, part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, is home to one of the best views of Chattanooga. My daughter and I love the hike from Cravens House up to Point Park. There are regular ranger programs here, and it's a great place to learn about the Civil War.
Part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Point Park is one of the best views of Chattanooga. My daughter and I love hiking here--we usually take the hike from Cravens House to Point Park and back. There isn't as much to see here as in the main section of the park below, but the view is well worth the trip.
