“fun by the beach”
Day-use picnic areas provide tables and raised fire boxes. Additional activities include surfing, whale-watching, birdwatching, nature photography, rock hounding, and fishing the surf or rock outcroppings for perch, cabezon, kelp, bass, or halibut. Many protected California native plants like sand verbena, saltbush, and sea rocket, grow within park boundaries.
I went there to spend a day hiking the beach but you can also camp (tents or cabins for rent). It's a wonderful, fine white sand beach. The camping restaurant is famous for its hamburgers which are excellent with a special creamy sauce. Be ready to wait about 20mn for it though.
Our hike was from the camping site to the south of the beach. You can supposedly hike 4 miles south to Point Conception but we had to stop after 2.5 miles because of some rocks that were blocking the way. I suppose you can go over them if you are a good climber. There was some tar on the beach on the way there but it's natural tar seeping from the ground, not human pollution. we saw a seal and some deer up on the cliff. We also saw some wonderful rock formations and stones. We had fun walking along some old ruined "fortifications" that used to protect the train track area.
This is a great place to explore; only locals come here, I saw no tourists hanging out here. Makes it even more precious to me :-)
