Terms of Endearment began location filming in Lincoln, Nebraska in early 1983. The film was based on a novel by Larry McMurtry and focused on the love and conflict between a mother and daughter. It was during the location filming that actress Debra Winger became romantically involved with newly-elected Nebraska Gov. Bob Kerrey. The relationship provided plenty of fodder for local gossip and news media as the events of each day's shooting and photos of the new couple appeared in the newspapers on a regular basis. A Nebraska youth, Troy Bishop, was cast as Emma's oldest son, Tommy.The campus scenes were originally to have been filmed at Nebraska Wesleyan University, but after reading the script, which included some off-color language, officials of the Methodist university withdrew permission to use the campus in the film. Campus scenes were then filmed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln downtown campus.
