“Nestled between the Allegany & Appalachian Mountains”
Boxerwood - a Nature Center and Woodland Garden located in Lexington, Virginia - is the legacy of Robert S. Munger (1911-1988). It is situated in a rolling Virginia valley nestled between the Allegany and Appalachian Mountains. The site contains habitats ranging from wetlands to forests to fields and fifteen acres of mature, naturalistically planted trees and shrubs, featuring both native and unusual plant specimens. The Boxerwood Education Association (BEA) is the non-profit organization founded in 2000 which oversees our activities in line with our mission "to educate and inspire people of all ages to become effective stewards of the earth." Our education programs for preschools through middle schools take place on site or at local schools and along local rivers. We also lead periodic programs for adults. The BEA sponsors special events for families and the community. To see some of our special past events or find out more of what we do, click on any of the rotating images. Each garden visitor experiences something new and amazing in every season. There are as many experiences as there are people to experience them. Please come to sit, stroll, explore, enjoy! The garden is open every day of the week during daylight hours. Winter hours are roughly 8:00 to 5:00. Maps and other information are at the Welcome Kiosk at the top of the driveway. Come down to the Lodge most weekdays for a "touch it" center and other information.
This is one of the most magical places I have ever visited. It was our first stop on our cross country road trip to move out West and it served as beautiful goodbye to Virginia. Magical for children and adult's alike. So much to explore. I will absolutely never forget it.
This is a wonderful little nature park! I have a 1.5 year old and we were on a multi-day road trip. We stopped here to let him play and to have a picnic. He never wanted to leave and I was very impressed with the kids play area. I wish we didn't have to drive so far to go to this park again.
Beautiful place to go walk around and enjoy nature's beauty. Great for kids and adults, with themed areas and lots of opportunities to learn and play!
We enjoyed a visit here and took a short trail walk before a fun explore of the nature play area. Boys really enjoyed.
