Watkins Mill, in Lawson, Missouri, is a preserved woolen mill dating to the mid-19th century. The mill is protected as Watkins Mill State Historic Site, which preserve its machinery and business records in addition to the building itself. The historic site is the centerpiece of Watkins Woolen Mill State Park. The property became part of the Missouri state parks system in 1964. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 in recognition for its remarkable state of preservation.
One of the areas hidden gems! What used to be a working community, complete with Mill, church and school! Which are all still standing. Now a lake with 4 mile paved trail around it, swim beach, picnic shelters, and 3 full loops of camping complete with sewer and electric. Perfect for families wanting to get away for the weekend! Try ziggys general store by the main entrance for food! And venture into historic Excelsior Springs or Kearney nearby!
One of nicer ones near home. Restrooms are always clean in the campgrounds. Beach is pretty well maintained.
I love this place. They have about a 3.75 mile paved walking trail around a lake and it also has a little stream on the back side that flow. Fishing, seasonal swimming, camping, a mill that you can tour, etc. This place has plenty of stuff for the outdoor people. It does NOT have any longer walking trails than the one stated that I am aware of but since it's a big loop, I suppose you could walk it a few times or hop off and head towards the mill area to stretch it out a little if desireable!
