To get here you have to follow a long dusty road off the beaten path. I would say 4WD is not required, however the OHV contingent has created some hefty wash boards to surmount as the price for entry. Big rigs might encounter some difficulty but the road is definitely passable for fifth wheels and trailers. Those looking for a unique place to dry camp will be rewarded with a scenic desert landscape with lots of dispersed camping and the somewhat famous "Giant Rock". A seven story high, freestanding boulder that the Native Americans once considered sacred. Now it stands covered with graffiti and a large section of the rock has been cleaved off the side. It is a strange and interesting sight to behold.

We stayed here one night near the giant rock and loved the space. There were a few people riding motorbikes and shooting at targets. Only downside was after dark when a group of kids came to party and shoot fireworks. We wish we’d have set up our tent a bit farther away from the giant rock. I’d still recommend and will return! Lots of space and cool vibes.

We camped near Giant Rock about a quarter mile before the main camping area. We made it in on the dirt/sand road in 2wd towing a 34 foot fifth wheel. We didn't camp in the usual place everyone else does because of too many nails around the multiple fire rings. Our spot was perfect just before the the main area on the right next to a nice rock outcropping. Peaceful and quiet as we stayed on a weekday and the stars were amazing.

Highly recommend this location. We showed up late and got a spot just as the sun was setting. Found a spot in the beginning based on other reviews. Felt like we had a lot of space and very private. It was a sunday night and several cars and atv’s came in and out w on. Heard some gun fire early on. Would highly recommend this location. Barely anyone was there and the views were great.

Easy to get to. Some other reviews mentioned a rowdier bunch — they were right lol. Still a very cool spot, we woke up at 3 a.m. to see the Milky Way here. Just watch for the glass when you’re looking to park and set up camp.

We were very hopeful after all the luck we had been having at other camp spots. It was a bit challenging to get to, and by the time we reached the end of the road where the main camping is located, it was 45 minutes before sunset and a few guys had set up camp. It looked like they were actually living there, and had been for awhile. We checked out some other spots close by but they were rather trashed with garbage, human waste as well as old furniture. There was evidence of fireworks and smoke bombs littered all over as well. Not to mention graffiti all over the rocks which is really sad.

We turned around and drove a mile back towards the main road and found a little quiet spot were there were no people, and we were able to camp for the night.

Sunrise was lovely but not sure lovely enough to stay here again unless we were in a bind for a spot.

We found free camping at the Giant Rock BLM camping area in California. The Giant Rock BLM camping area in California offers free camping and the camping area is expansive. Rock formations coupled with this flat expansive area of the Mojave Desert provides an awesome place to camp and explore. In this video, we take you on a walking tour of the Giant Rock BLM dispersed camping area and show you the condition of the access road. Terrible RV Spot! It’s a raceway for ATVs and trucks. Constant noise, dirt, dust, graffiti, garbage. If you have children or pets, I would worry they would get run over. Road to get in is hazardous and difficult to get in. A Class A would not make it. Awful.

Taking the direct route in from Landers isn't too bad if you're a bit adventurous. The YouTube video on here shows the woop dee woos that count for about a half mile of the route. I cleared not problem and saw a few dual axel toy haulers that were fairly low riding coming in with no problem.

If you meander out there are some sand pockets off the beaten road.

Camping two spots down from the Giant Rock on a weekend was pretty wild the first nite. Everyone was super friendly you just have to consider that revving an engine as they go by means "hello", loud music in UTVs is a way of "sharing" and if you camp in a spot with a banked race track going through it you will have front row race seats. Oh BIG fireworks!!!!!

There is quite a bit of trash and graffiti.

But really,,,, It's loud, rowdy and very friendly. Wave to folks knowing if you get your RV stuck most of these people would stop and help get you out.

The place is supposed to have a "vortex" to it, an ancient Native significance and a suspected German spy accidentally blew himself up in a dug out home under the main boulder. If there is a vortex it's just not a quiet one.

If you climb there's unlimited bouldering everywhere and several bolted routes up Giant Rock.

Weekdays are quieter but that probably varies a little. There are quite a few spots further from the main boulder that would be quieter. It was definitely the party epicenter. There were tracks going in but might be good to walk it in a bigger rig.

I never located water or waste dumping closer than Yucca Valley.
