“hike a winding trail around Diamond Lake”
The John Dellenback Trail is a paved trail that winds around Diamond Lake. It is designed for all types of bicycles and bike riding abilities. This 11 mile trail is not limited to bicycling only as hikers and Nordic skiers also use the trail. It follows easy grades with a maximum of 8%. The first one-half mile is managed as a barrier free trail and wheelchair use is encouraged. The path takes you through many unique places in the recreation area, with magnificent views of Mt. Bailey and Mt. Thielsen. Bicycle symbols painted on the pavement indicate the route through Diamond Lake Campground and Diamond Lake Resort. This trail is closed to all motorized use and horses due to conflicts between these users. The trail features a Forest Service South Shore Picnic area with 23 group/individual picnic units, lighted pavilion, picnic tables, barbeque pits, horseshoe pits, volleyball court and playground. Cheese Hole is the deepest portion of the lake and a favorite hide-out of trophy sized rainbow trout. It is named for the favorite bait of still fishermen. Directions from Roseburg: Travel east on Highway 138 for 80 miles and turn west onto Road 4790 into the Diamond Lake Composite. The following areas provide access to the bicycle path with vehicle parking available:-South Shore Picnic Area -Diamond Lake Campground (Parking at boat ramps) -Diamond Lake Resort -Thielsen View Campground -Broken Arrow Campground (Parking at restrooms in "H" loop)
Trail begins in a conifer forest setting then leads hikers through the dunes and the deflation plain and ends at the ocean beach.
The trail offers either a difficult trek to the beach or an easy self-guided interpretive loop.
The 2.7 miles to the beach may feel even longer as you traverse soft, open sand dunes. The open sand is unmarked due to constantly changing conditions. Hikers are advised to climb the tallest dune to get their bearings.
Always use caution on the beach. Watch for sneaker waves, know the tide schedule and stay away from logs in the surf or on wet sand. Look out for deep water and strong currents.
