“a great summer family getaway”

John Day Dam and the adjoining Lake Umatilla are both great summer family getaways, where visitors can enjoy cool waters and beautiful  scenery. Many recreation opportunities are available along the shores of Lake Umatilla and on the John Day River, such as boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, swimming and sail boarding. This area is also along the historic Lewis and Clark route. John Day Dam is 216 miles upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River and located at Exit 109 off Interstate 84 in Oregon. The project consists of a navigation lock, spillway, powerhouse and fish-passage facilities on both shores. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains six public use areas, four of which have camping ranging from tent camping to sites with electrical hookups. Three marinas are also located in the other parks (which are not maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers) that are scattered around the lake. Come visit the John Day Lock and Dam and Lake Umatilla to experience the fun and excitement to be had in these great waterways.
