Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on April 26, 2021Very clean campground. Maintained nicely. Water on most of the sites, tables, and shaded. Guess you can hike along the lake, to the "Unfinished Castle" but hear there are a few steep cliffs to be careful about. I plan on doing that trail when I go back.
Bad thing is it is right on the dam so you hear the traffic noise.
The rangers and volunteers drive through several times a day so it also felt safe being there alone.

Free camping with water hookups. Only complaint for us is the spots are really shady. We have 4 solar panels on the roof so we like to stay in spots with nice sun access. Luckily we got a full charge that day, so we were able to stay at this beautiful campground. The camp host was very welcoming, the spots were mostly clean but sadly people did leave quite a bit of trash by the creek. Pack in pack out please.
Each site has a table, water hook ups and a fire ring. You’re allowed to stay for 14 days.

I scouted this location a couple of weeks prior to camping here, and could not believe how nice it is. So, at the end of July 2018 (109 degrees!), I came here and camped for 3 days. There are many, many locations to camp. Many of them (didn't count) have water right at the table; others share a community faucet, but none too far away. As previously mentioned, abundant shade covers most of the campsites. As a tent camper (on a motorcycle), this is a PLUS, especially at 109 degrees! However, in this area, disbursed camping is allowed as long as you don't drive on the grass. There is one brick building toilet which I never entered, and two portable outhouses that were quite clean and fresh. The park has an outstanding swimming area that attracted many people and traffic during the daytime, but most of them left as darkness approached. The park host told me the water is 65 feet deep, literally an underwater cliff, about 3 or 4 feet from the limestone rock edge. Plenty of flat, white limestone rock upon which to bake like a lizard at the water's edge. This location is near the dam and the road that goes over it. That kind of noise doesn't bother me much, but be aware it exists. Many times I've paid for places that were not as attractive as this, and plan to repeat the visit when the temperature is more pleasant.

We stayed at site #9. More than enough room for our 19’ trailer. Parked our truck beside trailer. Site is spacious. Flush toilets were about a 10 minute walk. Very shady site. Site #8, next-door, had water available. There was no lantern hook nor a metal fire pit at this site. Previous camper had made a fire pit with rocks.

Because of the reviews I expected a much nicer area. The spots that have water close to camp site are obviously for tent campers only since they are adjacent to parking lots, one a steeply sloped parking lot. The other campsites are fully shaded, close together and hardly room enough for anything larger than my 12'. There are about 3 sites that have what looks like full hookups, but one was blocked off and other two are occupied. Camp hosts? The area could have been exceptional if any thought had been given to layout. I ended up staying in parking lot since the top part of it was the only semi level area that was open.
Returned in January for another try and was all set up only to be told that I could not stay at any of the "tent" camping sites since you have to park in the parking lot. I unhooked, and parked next to trailer so I only used 2 spots. When I asked if there were any "camp sites" (there are about 5) with sun since I have solar, the question was ignored and basically threatened me with "if the park ranger"... so I left. I've found common courtesy to go a long way, camp host was a jerk.

We enjoyed our stay. Site 8 has a water spigot but no fire pit. There are flush bathrooms and a dumpster at the top of the hill near the dam.
Thete are only 4 RV sites available to the public. The rest are tent, blocked off or permanently occupied. Never saw a camp host!
“Car campers” like to park in the RV spots leaving RVs no where to park. RVs are not allowed in the parking lots or tent sites. Luckily when we arrived there was a spot open.
Low hanging tree limbs, Class A and 5th wheels I wouldn’t recommend. Tight back in spots! Lots of trees good for shade but not for solar.
Couple gas stations and Library within walking distance. Dollar General about a two min drive. Town of Whitney has laundry, groceries and auto part store and is about 20-25 min away.
House up on hill opposite dam has a dog that barks, a lot!! Road noise was moderate at site 8.

Easy to back in spot, very spacious and we parked our truck next to it. We’re driving cross country and it was a really pretty place to experience for free especially. The spot has trees shading my trailer and a water spigot. 5 min walk to the dam, about 10 to bathrooms. Version cell service worked fine, well enough to stream. There is a dump spot up the road, less than 10 min drive.
There was multiple people with their dogs off their leashes, it sucks people still do that.

Stopped here on the way up to Dallas - ended up staying about 3 days longer than I expected just to catch up on trailer/truck work. Lovely quiet area, all my neighbors were very friendly and respectful. There were camp hosts on site while I was there doing rounds every now and then. The sites closer to the water are for tents, and there are about 7 or so more RV focused spots. 4 RV spots with electric/water/dump, but they were blocked off and for hosts only. The dam is a close walk, and interesting to check out. Lots of locals come here to fish and enjoy the weekend. I stayed in Site 9 and it was very large and probably on the bigger size in regards to driveway length - so likely the best fit for bigger rigs if its available. Gas is very close, but probably 15-20 minutes from the closest grocery store + laundromat. Verizon was good enough to stream and work from ~15-20mbps down, but zero t-mobile and sprint service. Be forewarned, every now and then the dam alarms sound when they're opening the discharge gates - only happened once for me but it was at 2am and scared the hell out of me. Beyond that just some road noise at night, not terrible.
