Confirmed by 8 users | Last reported on May 19, 2024This is an excellent place to stay if you want to be close to Zion without staying inside the crowded park. As a bonus it's not only free and gorgeous, but right next to a really fun network of mountain biking trails.
Also, the town of Hurricane, where you can find several laundromats, grocery stores, and a nice library, is a quick 15 minute drive.
There are probably half a dozen RV suitable sites on Sheep Bridge Rd. While the road is dirt it was in relatively good condition when we visited and there are a number of places to turn around should you need to. The exact coordinates of our site were: 37.198038, -113.218369. Here you will find a short road with a turn around at the end and a nice parking spot on the side.
The other sites on the road varied from simple pull-offs to short roads with spots for multiple vehicles. Just be aware that this is a very popular mountain biking area and some of the pull-offs are trailheads. While there are no rules against camping there, you will definitely have lots of company, especially on the weekend.
The only negative to this area is the trash. We collected a massive pile of shot gun shells, multiple cans and bottles and even a large broken mirror. It's always disappointing to see people disrespecting our public lands.
Our reported cell service is with a booster, but even without we go a strong and speedy signal.

If you’re in the Hurricane/Virgin, UT area to mountain bike or visit Zion National Park then this is the place to boondock. We were 17 miles from our boondocking site to the main entrance of Zion National Park in Springdale. Sheep Bridge Rd. also is home to the Hurricane Cliffs mountain bike trail system. This means we were able to ride from our front doors onto the trails. Other mountain bike trail systems in the area are all close by, making this a good central hub. Don’t worry if you don’t bike - mountain biking trails also equals hiking trails.
Towards the entrance of Sheep Bridge Rd. is Falls Park. Check it out if you want access to the Virgin River to play in (not a good put-in for kayaks or canoes). You’ll want to visit Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Creek State Park (state park fees required) in Hurricane for boating activities.
The town of La Verkin is right down the road with a dump station and free water at the Maverick gas station and a Davis grocery store (recycling available here). Hurricane is a few more miles further south and has a library, laundromat, hardware store, and a great bike shop – Over the Edge Sports. Wi-Fi speeds in Hurricane are uniformly pathetic, no matter where you connect. Stick to your cell data. St. George, the second largest city in Utah (but doesn’t feel like it) is about 30 minutes away and has everything else you may need.
There are a bunch of boondocking sites available along Sheep Bridge Rd., depending on your rig set up and size. As Watsons Wander mentioned, some pull off spots are actually trailheads so you don’t want to stay there. The area tends to get more crowded on the weekends, but we haven’t seen it get annoyingly so. Also, there’s a lot of cryptobiotic soil in the area. Please make sure you park where other rigs have parked and pay attention to where you walk and drive. Read the "Response to Disturbance" section http://www.soilcrust.org/crust101.htm to learn why we should be careful when it comes to cryptobiotic soil.

We drove up a good dirt road for about a mile to a very private spot with a 360 view. It was off just a bit from the main road off a secondary road with our back to the main road. We could barely see the next site down the road and could not hear them at all.
Nice views almost all around, but for a couple of rock piles, as there is a community pit managed by the BLM up the road a ways. We also collected some trash from around the site, not surprising since there had been a mountain biking event a few days prior.
This is great mountain biking territory though we spent our time visiting the park and getting some RV repairs. There is lots of room to walk doggies.
The location is about 20 minutes from Zion and about 15 minutes from the town of Hurricane, grocery shopping and other conveniences.
We had good strong signal, since we were at a high point, but most of the area below us and down to the main road had no service, including on the way to Hurricane.

We camped at one of the first sites because the furthest one was taken but the view was gorgeous. There was a decent amount of traffic on Sheep bridge road in the afternoon but nothing annoying. Go for it. It's so close to Zion.

Sheep Bridge Road is a great boondocking area right near Zion. I stayed midweek in late February and had no trouble finding a spot - it's huge. Saw some campers who had continued on the road and turned onto a canal road overlooking the bluff. It looked like a great spot though we didn't go check it out in our rig.
We camped a few miles off the highway at a panoramic point with 360 degree views. Internet was perfectly acceptable for working, though not blazing fast.
Saw a good amount of other campers but left them in peace - there was plenty of room for all.
Note that if wet this spot would be tricky for many rigs, even a tiny AWD one like mine. The site we chose had two deep ruts in it from the last rig who (it looks like) got stuck.

If you like the high desert this is for you. Many bike and atv trails. Views of the plateaus are 360. The are is littered by flagstone tailings from the private quarry on the road. Great to take back home for a patio.
The only reason I wouldn't stay here again is because North Creek BLM is less than a mile up the road off of Kolob Terrace Rd. We like it so much more.

We camped on one of the ridges on the side of Sheep's Bridge RD close to W. Highway 9. GPS will bring you in on the E. Highway 59 side, so if you are camping here to go to Zion, either ignore GPS for the final portion of your route, or you'll have a lot of dirt road driving to do (as I did...). If you want to come in from Highway 9, the Sheep's Bridge turn off is just before you enter Virgin Utah if coming from I-15.
One of my travel companions works a 9 to 5 online, so connectivity is important, and he had no problems with his carrier, and I had full signal strength with my T-Moble 4G. It is a busy camp area, but there is PLENTY of room for everyone to spread out. There are some deep ruts in some of the camp spots, so it's probably easy to get stuck right after a heavy rain, but I can't speak directly to this, as it didn't rain while I was here. I am in a Class C, and my travel companions are in a large 5th wheel, and neither of us had any problems finding camp spots (we are in a spot large enough to accommodate us both, with plenty of room for a larger caravan). Where I am parked, I did not need to use leveling blocks, so there are level places available. We are on a ridge, so when the wind picks up we are pretty much in it's path, but the views are AWESOME, so it's a trade off. There are smaller camp sites in more protected places well sheltered from the wind, but without the views of Zion NP.
No trees, so no shade, but plenty of solar. I was in float charge for my house batteries well before noon most days, even charging all my devices and running my laptop. There is propane available at the RV resort two miles East on Highway 9, and free dump stations (with potable water) in the campground just inside Zion NP, so services are easy to acquire.
I had a wonderful relaxing time, with easy access to Zion. All in all an outstanding boondocking site.

This is a very convenient location to get to Zion or Hurricane, UT. There are a good amount of camping spots. You will want to try to get a spot further off the road as it gets very dusty. This is a popular road for bikers and 4 wheelers and boondocking traffic. I have never been anywhere that was so dusty, but my spot was only a few feet off the road.
So I had some interesting troubles while there. 1) They came by and graded the road after I parked in prep for a bike race. This meant I had to go buy a shovel to lower the rise for my low clearance trailer 2) The grading exposed sharp rocks and I got a flat 3) they kicked off all campers in one area (where I was) for the bike race.
I rated it decent still because there was good internet where I was camped, easy access to Zion and towns and meets a need for boondocking.

Great place to drycamp with close access to Zion National Park. There are lots of sites along the road with plenty of room for rigs of all sizes. Recommend accessing the road from Highway 9 and you won't have the issues with it washing out like it does at the other end. Will stay here again.

Come early in the day and you are likely to snag a lovely boondocking spot with eye-popping views of Zion and Flying Monkey Mesa. However, don’t expect quiet and solitude here.
Sheep Bridge Road is a popular boondocking spot for folks visiting Zion. There are many boondocking sites located along the road, which the locals use as a short cut between Hwy 9 and Hwy 59. There are also several popular trailheads along the road, so expect lots of traffic much of the day and into the night.
We arrived early afternoon and found a large, level spot a little off the road. The area we chose had two campsites and a small turn-around loop that was not suitable for RVs. Sites are dirt with fire rings. No other amenities. We also noticed a lot of small scrap metal, including some nails, littering the area. It looked old, like maybe the area had been a dump years ago. Just check your site and don't go barefoot.
Be advised that someone is providing the hordes of rental RVers with this location, but not informing them of BLM dispersed camping rules or basic etiquette. We’ve met many lovely people from all over the world enjoying the national park system in rental RVs and this is the first time there’s been a problem. We had one guy come over after dark and take all our firewood. He left the next morning and someone else moved into the second space. He then had the audacity to come back and try to squeeze in where there was no designated campsite, saying he’d just park in the vegetation. No, no, no.
For the first several nights we spent a great deal of time explaining the rules of dispersed camping (as best we could) to folks in rental RV’s. Many were hunting for a place after dark and trying to park anywhere they could. Once they pulled in, it was difficult for them to get turned around and having folks run over your patio area in the dark is no fun. We started to feel like Boondock Vigilantes. 😊 We were thrilled when a full-timing couple set up in the second space with plans to stay for a few days. We finally solved the problem by parking our car in the access drive with an “All Campsites Full” sign in the front window.
It could be that the craziness was related to the Memorial Day Weekend, but given how quickly the campground fills up in Zion, I would guess alternative campsites are always in high demand. While the views are spectacular here, next time we will look for a site less visible from the road and a little less accessible.
Our Verizon service fluctuated from 1X to 3G to 1 bar of 4G unboosted. We managed a fairly stable 2 bars of 4G boosted.
