Out of all the places we stayed on our road trip, this is the one I've been thinking about the review for the most. Yes, I would stay here again, assuming the new ownership moves forward with the campground like they have with the lodge. I might not want to repeat the exact experience we had, although the lodge experience saved the visit. This review might become somewhat outdated as new ownership improves the place and as it gets up and running for the season, so consider that.
Context: new ownership took over about a year ago, we arrived in early June, so we had the riverside area to ourselves. Looks like it's more "up and running" now.
The lodge is a bar and restaurant with wifi. There are about six things on tap, many options in the fridge, and the onion rings are literally the best I've ever had. It's become a popular spot for locals. A few were hanging out while we were there, and we were told that the place was packed during snowmobile season. Not a lot of other options right close by, which is something to consider if you're staying here. Get your groceries before you arrive. Google reviews seem mostly to be talking about the food.
The staff is very, very friendly and helpful. We wanted to go tubing. They provide a shuttle service, but their rental tubes hadn't been dewinterized yet. So we bought tubes they had for sale and had a terrific time on the river.
Perhaps some of the dissatisfaction I had was the expectations when the place calls itself a "resort." It was not resort-like, and the price seemed high for the camping experience when having a good time meant spending additional money at the lodge and for tubing. At the time of booking, we got the impression that the river bar in our camping area would be open. It was not, and had not been open for some time. Would it have made any sense for it to be open? Absolutely not with only two of us in the area. But again, it was our expectations of hanging out by the river at a resort vs. the reality.
We had booked our site 24 because on the map it's right on the water. However, there's not really good access to the river directly from the site. Any other site would have been equally good, although I would opt to stay at site 1 if I had a choice for privacy and shade.
No Verizon service when we were there and no wifi riverside.
The staff was hard at work either with service or fixing things up the entire time we were there, so the experience might be significantly different. My 3 stars is based on value and expectations, as described in this review. I wouldn't be surprised if this place were a 4 or 5 star campground by 2024.
