November 2019 stay:
We stayed here while passing through the area. It is a 6 miles drive from the hwy to the campground and it is gravel and very bumpy. But, the campground is dreamy and was worth the drive for us. The stream was partially frozen and the ground was covered in fall leaves. Only one other person camped there the night we were there. Zero cell or wifi, so be sure you don't need that.

The park is off the beaten path and is very secluded. There are some sites right on the river but we opted for one close to the road. Many of these sites have fresh water if you need to fill up your tank. I didnt see any dump stations. The road in is very wash boarded and actually rattled out my paper towel holder..lol

I stayed at Chukar park after reading the reports on Campendium. Use the coordinates and not the street address my GPS wanted me to turn into a field 1.5 miles short of the campground. Warning don't venture down the dead end road at the campsite if you have a trailer there is no turn around and its tight for a truck turning around. The road to the campground is very washboard as soon as you turn off the highway and super dusty my max speed was 15mph. This camp is right on the river there is a nice little knee deep wading pool off spot #17 to cool off in and plenty of potable water spigots around the camp. I did not use the toilets they seemed to be well placed around the park. I'm going to list what I saw as pros and cons.
Pros Cons
Lots of shade spot #6 (mine) best for camper Not friendly to rigs over about 34'
At night very quite Noise from cattle trailers speeding on road in daytime
Friendly camp host Over grown with tumbleweed around fire pits and sites
Grass areas (tent sites) very well cared for No dump station
The park filled up on Friday night with that said there were only four campers the rest were tent campers passing thru. This could be a beautiful little park with a little work the camp host (very nice) lent me a rake and in about 1.5 hrs my site was looking good minus the tumble weeds. The normal cost of $5.00 is great I paid 1/2 that with my golden age card.

Coming back from the Oregon coast needed a stopover. This blm cg is awesome & worth the 6 miles from hwy 20. The n. Fork malheur was running high. Beautiful vistas from this campsite. Only negative was microtrash which I picked up & garbage cans needed emptying. Having water & garbage cans was a plus. Didn’t venture to beaulah reservoir. Nice high desert area away from hwy noise. Quite & beautiful night skies.

Plenty of room between sites. You can park right next to the river. Trash cans were empty when I was there. Some garbage in the fire pit. Beautiful and quiet (aside from the river which was moving fast).

We were driving through around 8pm and seeing that the reviews were so good for this campground we decided to pull in. The road to the campground was pretty dusty and did have washboards but they weren’t horrible.
The campground was nice, and well cared for. The problem, mosquitos, swarms of them. We got out to look at the campground map and were covered in them within 30 seconds. We drove around to look at spots (most were open) and tried going out again. Not sure if it was a recent hatch as someone else that wrote a review in late May didn’t mention mosquitos. We abandoned the idea to camp here and decided to just pull over on the highway somewhere else. Bummed because the place was nice.

The 6 mile dirt road in took us over a half hour to drive, which was no fun. Once we got there, many of the sites looked like a transient encampment with hundreds of cardboard boxes stacked and makeshift tents. We did not feel comfortable staying, so drove back out and up the road to Riley, which was a great stay at Chickahominy

My Grandson and I were looking for a place to go from Burns and chose this. Our site was great and clean. Water was not on until May which we planned for. Very nice canyon park with clean bathrooms.
