“America's favorite gangster lovebirds lived here”

***This location is on private property. Please do not access this property without the express permission of the homeowners.*** Joplin, Missouri is rich in history. One of the most noted locations in Joplin's history is a small garage apartment rented by the notorious outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. The exact location of their shootout with the law that resulted in the tragic deaths of two peace officers. Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker, Buck & Blanche Barrow and William Daniel Jones rented the apartment April 1, 1933. The infamous bank robbers lived over this garage for less than 2 weeks before the April 13, 1933 shootout with the authorities, who had been tipped off about the apartment hideout. Two officers died, and Bonnie and Clyde escaped. Plans to make this a museum seem to have halted, and it's being rented out due to the local housing shortage after the May 2011 Joplin tornado. Still visible from street. Their stay ended in a shootout on April 13th. The hideout has been featured in a BBC Time Line documentary aired on the National Geographic Channel. Soon after, it was added to the National Registory of Historic Places. The charming stone garage apartment was restored and beautifully decorated in 1930's era decor with all the comforts of home by a local pastor, Phillip McClendon and his wife, in hopes of turning it into a bed and breakfast. The charming rock garage apartment hosted many historians, notable authors and Barrow Gang family members.

Pretty neat experience. There are no markings or any signs but this place makes a statement for itself. An amazing piece of American History!

Neat place to see on the way through for the history and story. Lots of cool old homes in the area and got to drive downtown after brunch. It was worth it for us :)

The door has been painted so it's no longer red. Interesting for a quick stop.

Cool to see but not much to it, you get to stare at the house and read the sign.
