“some say it's... dino-mite.”
Dinosaur National Monument is a United States National Monument located on the southeast flank of the Uinta Mountains on the border between Colorado and Utah at the confluence of the Green and Yampa Rivers. Although most of the monument area is in Moffat County, Colorado, the Dinosaur Quarry is located in Utah just to the north of the town of Jensen, Utah. The nearest communities are Jensen, Utah, and Dinosaur, Colorado. The park contains over 800 paleontological sites and has fossils of dinosaurs including Allosaurus, Deinonychus, Abydosaurus (a nearly complete skull, lower jaws and first four neck vertebrae of the specimen DINO 16488 found here at the base of the Mussentuchit Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation is the holotype for the description) and various long-neck, long-tail sauropods. It was declared a National Monument on October 4, 1915.
Quarry exhibit building, Harpers Corner hike, off road trail down to Echo Park - all fantastic. But the off road trail to the unpaved 14N roads was longer than expected and probably best avoided unless you have some time on your hands and a full tank of gas.
This was amazing, so interesting! I expected to see fossils already put together like we see in museums, but these fossils were still in the ground. So glad we stopped.
The new exhibit hall is spectacular! The entire area is stunning and the primitive camping areas are usually empty but they are the best we have ever been to. Can you tell this is one of my family's favorite areas?
A must see. Amazing! Very Educational hands on Experience We happened across it by accident. We were traveling in our RV from Jackson Hole down to Moab , so decided to take the shorter drive through the mountains . We made it but it is not for the faint of heart. There is 10 STEEP switch backs coming down the mountain into Vernal. We were driving a 39 ft and our friends following in a 45 ft. Very scary but so worth it.
Breath taking. We needed more time to explore and plan on going back to explore more
Truly a great place. Well organized and wow! Touching history! Can't be missed!
