Sandy Creek Park Campground

This park is absolutely amazing. COE can be proud of this park. It has lots of room between sites and all the amenities you ever need. Camp is clean, quiet and kept up. Lots of big rig sites and all paved with water and 50 Amp service. Comfort station is spotless.

These campsites have a lot of room all have great views of the lake but some have better access than others. Lots of grassy areas and big trees so sand and dirt are not a problem Each site has paved flat parking areas water, and power as well as covered picnic tables, fire pits, BBQ stands and lantern racks. There are a couple of boat ramps too. The restrooms are serviceable but have a slight odor. Maybe it is just summer and the heat.
The access road is blacktop but narrow and a couple of miles long from US190. Be careful going around corners.
We'll worth the cost.

Quiet, secluded, serene, covered concrete table, lots of tall pines with a sprinkle of cypress trees. Excellent access to the lake, fire ring, electric and fresh water. Nice dump station with water for back flushing your tanks. Clean restrooms and a nice hot shower. A very enjoyable time .

Our price reflects the 50% senior discount. We pulled in here late with just enough time to get set up before dark. Not sure of our site number, but we were way in the back, backed up to the lake in the woods. Sites are well spaced. We did have to level side to side. Roads in the park are paved, as are the sites. We had a covered picnic table and fire ring. The road in was long and windy, but that is what you get if you want to be away from it all. ATT cell service was great. Bathrooms were clean.

Another great COE park, nestled deep in tall pine forest on the beautiful lake. The other reviews tell the story. We found it quiet and peaceful, with very few campers, even on the weekend. Woke up to peepers, birdsong and fog on the water. Winter weather warm but variable but we didn't mind (we're not shoveling snow!) Clean older restrooms, wide sites- paved but a bit uneven, great views all around. Wish I had my kayak, even in the rain. No hiking trail- it's a bit swampy in the woods- but miles of paved road for me and Molly to wander. Jasper has all the amenities, about 30" away, and we had good cell signal for our hotspot.

Hidden jewel of a place!

Our intention was to come here for 2 weeks and then go to another lakeside CG for another 2 so we would be able to really visit the area but mostly spend time hiking and kayaking. The plans were thwarted by unusually cold and very rainy weather through most of the past fortnight. We have canceled the plans for the next 2 weeks so our review is based somewhat on that.
The CG is beautiful and actually has 4 sort of separate camping loops. 3, including a primitive area suitable only for tents, are past the gate and reception area. Sites 68-77 are before the registration booth and have no gate (well there is one there but they do not close it in the off season and I am not sure about later in the year) Those sites seem to be the most level, have gorgeous views of the lake and during our time here have not been even close to flooded. Though the "pull thru" site at 77 is not very large and would only fit a smaller trailer/rig. That loop is also the site of decent showers and toilets with seats.
In the other loops:1-6 are primitive, 7-25 are located nearest the registration area and are alongside the lake. (There are two screened shelters that are $25/night, sites 13 and 15 and 14 is a very long, straight pull through). The sites are nicely spaced but vary widely in how level they are-some are flat and others have an obvious slant sometimes front to back and on one side. We are in a 33 ft class and had to switch sites after being unable to get level (5 blocks) on site 12. Finding another site in the off season should not be a problem since we, and several people we met here, were given a list of the sites that would be open and were able to choose one. Some sites are 30, some are 50. It is in this first area that the shower room leaves so much to be desired. Of the 2 women's showers, only one worked and that was only because the water (push button, just warm) sprayed out-not necessarily on you though. My husband said his was a bit better but the water was never very much hotter than warm. The toilets in this bathhouse are also stainless steel with no seat. None of this really matters if you have your own shower but it's worth knowing if you plan to use the showers.
Sites 26- 63 are quite a bit further down the road (after the dump station which is after site 25). Once again they vary in how level they are and #s 55 and 56 were underwater when we were here. There was quite a bit of standing water at the end and I'd be concerned with biting insects in the warmer weather if it was rainy. I did not look at the showers but was told they were like the ones near the gate. UPDATE: While we were here we had 2 significant rainstorms. While we felt safe in our rig I did find a branch that had come off a tree nearby that had pierced the wet ground by about 8" and was glad the tree had not been at our site. However, more signifiant is the fact that after each of the 2 storms the road into the campground Rte 155 was closed due to high water. There is a back way in via Rtes 777,153,151 to 155 but much of that route is unpaved and had significant standing and running water wen we left the campground. We did not have a problem getting through it but it was significant enough that I would say if you are driving a small truck or car it should not be attempted. Aside from the fact that there are large puddles throughout the park. So, check the forecast and if in doubt call the park. They did NOT post signs about the closure.)
The covered picnic table and fire pit/grill at each site are well kept. The roads are decent. There are boat ramps in each area which are nice and handy. The kayaking was nice, although we had to cut short both trips due to incoming storms and the winds picking up. With the cold we did not see alligators or snakes but were told by long time visitors that there are regularly alligators along the shoreline in the warmer weather. As normal-they don't bother anyone who doesn't bother them, but it's not an area where I would let small children or pets roam free. There are 2 short hiking trails, one goes over to Martin Dies State Park that adjoins this area. The campground roads as well as Rte 155 are quiet enough to ride bikes and a trip to the dam is only 5 miles round trip.
Jasper is 30" away but from our POV there are limited selections in several areas. Your perspective will depend on where you are from but it would be worth bringing something that may be hard to find. There is ONE laundromat in town. It's clean (even though there is a sign in the restroom warning people not to spit in the trash can) and next to impossible to find. It's called Jasper Wash Tub, on Rte 190/W. Gibson St and adjacent to a car dealer. There are both a hospital and vet in town (Christus Jasper Memorial) and Lakes Area Vets (409-384-8731 24 hour emergencies). Woodville is on the other side of the lake and has similar services.
Big Thicket National Preserve is about 45 min drive (via Woodville then south) and well worth a visit. The first national preserve it has an impressive and interesting history as well as being a UNESCO site for Biodiversity. In Feb there wasn't much to see but by March until the fall the large preserve with a long hiking trail broken into shorter sections is filled with all types of flora and fauna.
Heritage Village in Woodville is also well worth visiting.
One note: whether coming from Woodville or Jasper, by FAR the shortest route will be to take CoRte 156 off 190 and then 155. 156 has a tiny green sign virtually feet before the turn which looks like a tiny country lane but is well able to handle all sorts of rigs. 777 is also possible and more scenic but also much longer.
Personally I think this park is perfect for those who live within a few hours and are looking for beauty, rest and relaxation. Coming here for more than a few days though in winter you risk not being able to do much if the weather turns bad.

A very lovely park with neat and mostly level asphalt pad. Includes a covered concrete picnic table, fire-pit supplied with a grill for open fire-pit cooking. Very gracious campground hosts/attendants during our 2-nights stay in early November. Several 30amp & 50amp sites along the lake with great lake views. We would definitely return! We paid $8 with America the Beautiful Senior Pass.

We had a wonderful lakeside site with lots of shade and a breeze off the lake. 50 amps worked great and we had water hookup. Dump station in campground, Playground for kiddos, several boat ramps. No swimming area, there are alligators.

This park could rate five stars if not for a couple issues. Such a wonderful place to take long bicycle rides and enjoy the lake breezes. As well, if you are a fishing person (and we are not, but do love eating fresh fish), then this is also the place for you. Plenty of sun and shade available, and if relaxing is your thing, this is also the place to do it. Each campsite has a covered picnic shelter. Our site was a pull-through so our front door literally opened directly into the shelter and made like an extra room for us. This campground is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, but was the perfect place for us to spend a few days recharging after a long drive and get ourselves ready to head for the Texas Hill Country. Anything longer than three nights here would be too much for us. Too bad this ACoE site did not have any washers and dryers as it would really have made a difference. The restrooms and showers were few, but fairly recently remodeled old structures combining the new with the old and perfectly fine for our needs (except for one temporary issue). We did stay three nights under our “lifetime senior pass” which totaled an amazing $24. Certainly a great value, and we did enjoy our site, and if you prefer privacy (which we do) the best sites would be 11, 12, 17, 18, 24, and 48.

County Road 155 coming into the park is in places rough, but okay. We rode our bicycles back out of the park about two miles on it to a most bucolic setting that we had noticed on the way in. Pastures and old dilapidated structures among tall pines, magnolias, and fresh spring waters. Alongside the beautiful cows we noticed the discarded bottles, burger and fry wrappers, and whatnot tossed onto the shoulder of the road much as we see in the panhandle of Florida. It demonstrated a lack of care that carried over to the shower room and restroom in the main campground where we were located. The maintenance of the sites and restrooms leave much to be desired. After one day not only were the two men’s showers filthy with empty shampoo bottles and soap wrappers, but the toilets were overflowing and unflushed. In my attempt to be a good citizen I took a ride down to the gatehouse to inform the nice lady attendant of the situation. She told me they had nothing to do with park maintenance and the subcontractors had already left for the weekend. She did offer to send her husband along with a stick, and if he could not get the toilets flushed they would have to lock the building. This was the weekend with a full campground so I was a bit concerned that things were not looking good. I hurriedly rode back and took it upon myself to get one of the toilets flushed, but the other one was completely full of shit, paper, and a whole roll of paper thrown in to top it off. The attendant’s husband soon arrived and was not nice, but he did have a stick. He grumbled at me that if he couldn’t get the one remaining problem toilet to flush he would just lock the building. I grabbed a trash basket and pleaded with him to scoop the giant glob of paper out knowing full well that the toilet wouldn’t flush again if he tried to flush that entire roll of paper down the drain. He said he didn’t care, he would just lock it up, but he did as I asked and the toilet flushed. But I thought to myself now here is a very unhappy person in a job that does entail a few customer service skills. And he was simply a dick, and one of the reasons this park gets only four stars when it could have gotten at least five if the attendants and property managers cared more, the campers were more considerate and hygienic in their toilet and showering needs, and if the area offered something extra like an interesting historic town nearby. Still, a great place to unwind, recharge, and ride bikes.

Stayed for a week over Thanksgiving, never realized so many came camping over the Thanksgiving weekend - not enough propane in the world to do that where we are from! Ended up with a huge 100' long pull thru. Can't say I really saw a bad spot. They have several spots that are non-reservable and are quite large. Spots are much larger than the state park down the road a bit. Quiet - even when quite full over Thanksgiving weekend. A bit confusing when trying to find your spot. When you get to the keep right sign just keep right and go around - looks like just a turn around but is a road for the spots along the lake and other areas, and to make sure you come in in the right direction. Bathrooms could use some help, I imagine they get quite a bit of use but could use some attending. Road in is a bit rough but asphalt and the place is really quite big rig friendly. Dump station a bit tight for a big rig, we pulled in and opted to back out vs trying the tight corner. Lots of trees dropping leaves, needles, pinecones etc so don't forget to climb up and sweep off the slides before you leave.
