Road Trip Classic

Our Take

This is just off I-94, which has a ton of interesting little stops. This is another super quick leg-stretch, but it’s a great example of the cool, kitschy, Americana stuff that you need to stop and see if you’re on a road trip. The fact that there are loads of buffalo around adds to the appeal of the stop, too.

“And yes, it's anatomically correct!”

The "World's Largest Buffalo" is a sculpture of an American Bison located in Jamestown, North Dakota at the Frontier Village. It was built in 1959 by local businessman Harold Newman. It can be seen from Interstate 94, overlooking the city from above the James River valley. The statue is a significant tourist draw for Jamestown and the source of its nickname, The Buffalo City. It is 26 feet (7.9 m) tall, 46 feet (14 m) long and weighs 60 tons. It was constructed with stucco and cement around a steel beam frame shaped with wire mesh. The final cost of construction was approximately $8500 in 1969; a significant overrun from initial estimates closer to $4600. The concrete slab that lies under the sculpture was added later and was not included in the initial cost. The sculpture is complete in many respects of detail. It is sculptured after a male bison in mid-stride and is anatomically correct. -Wikipedia

Ok, most "giant" things, we've learned, are actually pretty small and totally lame. This, however, is not one of those things. This buffalo is freakin' huge. A welcome spot to stretch your legs. Be sure to check out the rest of the Village and Museum.

Get off on exit 258. There is a small cowboy town next to it that’s not even mentioned. Well worth the stop if you want to get a break from driving

This is a great place to stop and stretch your legs while on a road trip! Whether it's just for a quick photo op with the Buffalo, or stopping to shop/sightseeing in the village. The buffalo is anatomically correct, so keep that in mind when aiming the camera. (Or brace yourself for many FB comments!!!)

It is a neat little village. Stuff for little kids to play on, cool recreations of old buildings, many you can walk into. The buffalo statue is enormous, and it's right near the fence where you can see the live buffalo. We even caught the white buffalo nearby and got a photo.

Great place to stop while driving thru North Dakota. The bison's parts were proportional. Maintenance could be better.

OK, some "world's largest" statues are, well, underwhelming in their magnitude. This one is really big.

Awesome buffalo! Unfortunately it started raining and we weren't able to enjoy frontier village but I'm sure we would have loved it also!

Great stop! Shopping, restrooms, a playground, a shelter, and a photo op. What more could a family ask for!?
