“Iconic Rock Tower!”
A rock tower that overlooks southern Anza Borrego Desert and Interstate 8 near the California / Mexico border. Built in the 1920's by a man named Burt Vaughn, to commemorate pioneers crossing the desert to get to San Diego, it is now owned by an individual owner. Nearby are some unusual rock carvings of skulls and animals, done by W.T. Ratcliffe, a retired engineer, in the 1930's.
Boulder Park at Desert View Tower is one of the coolest things I did so far this trip! The young boy in a man really comes out in this place. The combination of bouldering and the art caved in and painted on the rocks was just awesome!
This is a cool lil place to stop, if you happen to not be in a hurry. It wont take long, most likely less than an hour and you will feel ready to move on. The views are really nice, the rock carvings are kinda cool. You can climb up into the rocks to be able to see all the carvings. You can get some great sunset shots from up here.
Another fun roadside trap to stretch your legs and climb around discovering rock sculptures. The restrooms were open which was nice, considering the tower was closed. Two friendly dogs roaming the property were there to wish us well as we left. It was fun seeing all the alien/junkyard installations en route to the tower. Along with a group of chained golden retrievers. Its definitely in a windy spot.
This is a little county park of sorts just off the highway. What a wonderful surprise. A fantastic stop to stretch your legs, see some unique art, climb some rocks and just be surprised. Don’t miss this one. Don’t miss the rock path. There is a surprise around every corner and it’s just wonderfully unexpected.
Can be windy. It's for sale for 2 million. Main tower free and for $6.50 each climb up tower & explore rock formations. Neat place to take kids.
Owner is very friendly. My puppy enjoyed running around off leash with the other friendly dogs on the property.
This was a trippy place. I stopped here on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. There were very friendly dogs on the grounds and a cool little gift shop. I stayed on the tower only a couple of minutes because it was so cold, but the view was amazing! It was worth the trip.
Cool place to stop and check out. The small fee to go to the top of the tower is well worth it...awesome view. There's also a UFO repair shop close by.
$6.50 to do the Tower and the Boulder Park. It's the monument of two zany, artsy guys. There's great views, a cool gift store (very rare that I say something like that) and rock art. What's not to love? I imagine kids would love it too.
This was our last stop before going home and we are so happy we did. These place is awesome. The guys are so nice. When we walked in there were a few dogs laying around who could have cared less that we were there. Everywhere we looked was beautiful especially the top of the tower. We also climbed the rocks even our kids (4, 6, and 8). You have to find all the painted rocks.
