“One of last unspoiled coastal wetlands”
At the settlement of la Caroline, French settlers struggled for survival in a new world. Many sought religious freedom in a new land, while others were soldiers or tradesmen starting a new life. The climactic battles fought here between the French and Spanish marked the first time that European nations fought for control of lands in what is now the United States. It would not be the last time.
My family and I visited this location after checking out the Kingsley Plantation. We did the nature trail, fort, and visitors center which had a museum in it. The staff were very kind and interacted with all of us. The girls were completing the junior ranger packet and the ranger was able to provide support without giving them the answers. They completed the junior ranger packet and were able to get the badge and stamp for the Junior Ranger Passport book.
