“A scene out of a storybook”
Known as one of visitor’s favorite attractions in the Wilds of Michigan, Presque Isle River Waterfalls offers a perfect location for hikes, picnics and photography. Enjoy a wonderful walk along the riverside through a forest of hemlocks, white pine and maples. A boardwalk offered along the rivers west bank for easier access and a more difficult trail runs along the east bank. Along this hike, make sure to stop at the swinging bridge at the river’s mouth where it empties into Lake Superior. Parking is near the trail head.

Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on August 29, 2022Our site was along Lake Superior shoreline. It was pretty big size and had nice trees for shade. This campground only has water hand pumps, no electrical and pit toilets. You can fill up water and use the dump station at the other campground in the park, Union Bay, if staying in the park. This was the nicest campground in the area (we checked out Union Bay, Black River and Little Girls Point). There are a lot of hiking trails in the park which were well marked. The rate does not include a MI state parks pass.
If you stay here we would suggest checking out Copper Peak Ski Flying Jump. The views from the top were awesome and would imagine it would be outstanding during the fall colors.

We were on a weekday tour of the western UP in the hopes of avoiding the crowds. So far things were pretty quiet, except for Bond Falls which was packed. Hoping for the same at this campground we saw a CAMPGROUND FULL sign at the unstaffed registration office when we arrived. The board indicated new arrivals for the day but not occupied sites. There is an orange cone system to indicate reserved sites. Undeterred, we drove through the 'generators allowed' loop (all filled) then the other loop finding a site with no cone and no sign of habitation. It was a great spot, mostly grass, partial shade yet open.
This is really a great little campground so very surprising it hasn't been reviewed in several years. Being remote as it is with no services it is well suited for the majority of campers there who fell into the more tent/truck camping crowd. There were just a few smaller RVs & trailers.
The road in from Wakefield was paved but a bit rough. The campground roads were paved but the sites were mainly grass. There are lots of stairs - down the steep bluff to the narrow beach and more all along the river for viewing the waterfalls. There are great views of the 3 sets of falls along the boardwalk and paths on both sides of the river. You can loop from the campground to the south boundary road to see all 3. Well worth the effort. Taking the southern boundary road east is a great drive with lots of turnoffs for more hiking and dispersed camping. The views of lake Superior are superior.
Don't count on much cell service but I think we had some very intermittent ATT with the booster.

Our 3rd time here. So peaceful. Mostly very large lots. Glad we have a generator section. Thankfully most people are respectful and only have them on for short periods of time. We just used to keep our motorhome batteries charged once a day.
Beautiful waterfalls and great hikes for all levels of skill
Already looking forward to next time.

The campground itself is basic. There should be plenty of room, but due to some odd spacing I wound up right on top of my neighbors. Services are minimal, which was fine with me. Campers were plundering the surrounding forest for firewood, which is not good. The good news is the location, which can't get much better, on a bluff overlooking Lake Superior. Hiking trails to gorgeous waterfalls leave right from the campground. Can't beat that!

We whispered the entire time we were there. It was the quietest campground we have been to in the last year. The outer ring spots are great, lake side is the best, but the other side is fine too. The middle is pretty open so you will be very friendly with your neighbors. The walk in tent sites seemed very private.
Parking the camper was super simple. The spots are wide and flat.
My only complaint is the toilets. By far they were the worst I’ve encountered. So many bugs. I’ve never seen so many bugs. Bugs. Everywhere.
Water is hand pump only. If you have a camper and want to fill you can either go to the Union Bay campground on the other side (40 minute drive), or spend 5 bucks at the city campground in Wakefield (25 minute drive). You can dump at either place too.
The ranger station is staffed every day. Firewood is available when the ranger is present. Its cheaper at Presque Isle than the Union Bay camp store.

We stayed at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Presque Isle Campground for three nights in late September. This rustic campground is very peaceful and tucked into a heavily forested area along the shores of Lake Superior. Our site, number 33, was very level and spacious with a fire ring and picnic table. There are two loops, each loop has two vault toilets that were cleaned every day while we were there. There are two hand water pumps located in the walk-in tent sites area, not very convenient for RV's. Trash receptacles are located at the entrance to the campground just beyond the campground checkin office. There are steps leading down to the lake shore, also a short walk from the campground is a trailhead leading to two beautiful water falls. Overall we greatly enjoyed our camping experience at this well maintained State Park campground.
