“leads to a small spring”
The Homer Springs Trail leads to a small spring discovered in 1973 by Homer Chappell. The spring is unreliable after midsummer. The trail crosses through a sparse canopy followed by a green, mossy meadow and a little further along is a dry open pumice area. The spring is in a gully at the end of the trail. This trail is within the Mt. Thielsen Wilderness and is therefore closed to mechanical and motorized use. Directions from Prospect: Travel north on Highway 230 to its junction with Highway 138. Continue on 138 and turn west onto Road 4795, the north entrance to Diamond Lake Recreation Area. Proceed .3 miles to the trailhead for the Howlock Mountain Trail on the left. Follow this trail for seven miles to the junction with the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCNST). Follow the PCNST 0.8 miles north to the Homer Springs Trail. Normally Accessible: Summer through Fall .
