With the main campground full, we were happy to find a decent spot in the primitive area at Sand Hollow. The primitive area is a huge sandy swath along the far side of the reservoir with a few firepits and picnic tables scattered about. There are pit toilets near the day use area, but nothing further along. Similar to boondocking, there are no designated campsites and the sand is very soft and deep in some places so it would be wise to scout ahead if possible. The location is beautiful, but the reservoir is a favorite of jet boats and the area is very popular with the ATV crowd. If you want peace and quiet, look elsewhere.
One of our biggest gripes was the amount of trash around the primitive camping area. The dumpsters were easily a mile from our campsite and “pack it in, pack it out” appears to be a novel concept here. Considering we were tagged $25 a night to camp, there should be more garbage collection sites and some effort put in by park staff to maintain the area.
We had 1 bar of Verizon 4G.

Staff was friendly. Paid $25 for a primitive site. Warned there may be some sand, lol it was all sand. Actually put our van in 4WD to get unstuck from sand. If you don’t mind razors and dirt bikes you might like this spot. There is not a view from the primitive area. The campground has amazing views and lots of sun.

Sand Hollow State Park is a HUGE area with 4 camping areas. Two campgrounds are improved with paved roads and sites with hookups (Westside and Lakeview), one has gravel pull through sites (Sandpit) and one area is dispersed camping.
This area is a diserpersed/boondocking type of area with a $25 fee past Lakeview campground. A bit overpriced considering what you get. The area is clearly marked where the camping can begin. Camping is only allowed on the lakeside of the road. The area isn’t very big, but can fit quite a few rigs. I think the park may limit the amount of people who can camp here.
We did not camp here, but we would have no problem camping here with our 5th wheel. There is a place to pull over before entering the area to scout, which is what we would do. There were definitely some sandy areas, but the main area would be fine for any 2WD vehicle. It was pretty busy here mid week. Lots of rigs were camped together as a group with their OHV toys.
There is a pit toilet, but no trash service. No tables, some makeshift firepits, and some lakefront “sites”. The area was pretty clean considering the lack of trash cans.
