“Owned with love and care”
Triple J’s Smokehouse, founded in 1994, is owned and operated with love and care by Jarrett and Rhonda Scales. Jarrett is a native Houstonian and a graduate of Kashmere High School. During his years at Kashmere, Jarrett was recruited by Fred Akers to play football for Purdue University, and after graduating Purdue in 1990 with a degree in Supervision, he decided to open a BBQ restaurant in the community where he was raised. Jarrett’s mom and dad are both excellent cooks, and his dad passed the secret cooking a tender brisket down to Jarrett. Rhonda is originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, and she and Jarrett are college sweethearts who met in 1990. Her degree is in Education, and when Rhonda moved to Houston, she both taught and pursued her Master’s degree at Texas Southern University. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Rhonda and Jarrett married in 1996, and soon after, Rhonda decided to come on board with Triple J’s to both grow the business and begin the catering side. The couple have two boys, Jalen and Dylen, who love to eat their parents’ cooking. The first Triple J’s location opened in 1994 on Lockwood and Kelley, and they operated there until 2002. Their current location on Homestead Road opened in 2005, and they have enjoyed HUGE success there for 7 years. In 1998, Triple J’s started selling their famous food at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where they continue to be one of the only African-American owned businesses in the show. Rhonda shares, “We are blessed to have served and worked with so many people and businesses in the Houston area including The Houston Texans, Destiny’s Child (Beyonce), Habitat for Humanity, the University of Houston, and Shell Oil. We are the go to caterer for many area businesses, churches, and schools.” Jarrett adds, “We help sponsor the Kashmere High School football team, and many of our customers that have different events and need sponsorship.” He is most proud of sponsoring and coaching his son Dylen’s 3rd grade basketball team, the Gulf Coast Blue Chips, to a WIN at the Primetime National Championship in Dallas, TX in 2011 and most recently his fourth grade team to a second place trophy in the All American Sports Championship in San Antonio, TX in June of 2012. Gooo Chips!! The enthusiam and passion Jarrett and Rhonda have for their customers and business is evident in the amazing barbecue they serve. The couple agrees and always says that, “Without our loyal customers we would be nothing!! We cannot do this without them and our awesome staff. We love & appreciate them both! Thank you, Houston!”

Everything is D' lish in spite of wrapped around line. It is very well worth it. The line-moves swiftly and the music played is bobbing. I grove along in the line to the beat in my own space. I... Read more
