“A touch of the Australian outback in kentucky”
Kentucky Down Under is an interactive educational Australian themed Animal Park & beautifully decorated cave, Kentucky Caverns. Visitors participate activities including hands on contact with Australian animals. Where else can you hand-feed colorful lorikeets in a walk-in Aviary, help with the chores at the Woolshed, meet a Kangaroo at the Outback, learn about Aboriginal culture, mine for gemstones and much more!
I went here a number of years ago, when my kids were little, and they loved it. It's like an outback farm in Kentucky. If you're in the Mammoth Cave area with kids, and looking for a diversion beyond the cave itself, Kentucky Down Under is it!
We visited towards the end of July 2021. It was a nice experience. You definitely need to be prepared to walk unless you're going to rent a cart to drive around in. From the entrance to the gift shop, it's a nice little hike uphill. Make sure you have water with you; if not there is some for purchase in the gift shop. Although a small zoo (rescue?), there were enough interesting animals to see. My 6 yr old really had fun gem mining and petting the kangaroos. The short tour through the cave is a welcoming plus since it gave a break from the heat.
Definitely visit as early in the day as possible. The kangaroos get pretty lethargic after around noon.
The kids (4, 8, and 10) loved it!
YOU CAN PET A KANGAROO
This Zoo is easy to get to and was amazing. They allow pets which was nice, since my dog hates being left in the car. They have a cave you can visit and feeding the kangaroos was so fun.
My kids loved this stop. They got to pet and feed goats, horses, kangaroos, emus, and lorikeets. The Onyx cave tour is really fun. It’s not for toddlers, but young kids can get to see pretty cool cave formations while weaving between the stalagmites.
It's amazing! Very interactive and fun.
A great stop! Cool cave, animals to interact with and beautiful nature hike. A bit pricey, but we enjoyed the stop...about 2 hours to see everything. If u have someone that has trouble walking distances, they have golf carts. Warning: the cave is NOT for anyone less than agile. Small spaces, lots of slippery steps up and down!!!
This was a completely unplanned stop on my road trip and it ended up being the best part of my trip! It is worth every penny. You really get to be close to animals and everyone is pretty friendly. If you are considering a stop here, do it!
