“An American cultural icon”
The Hollywood Sign (formerly the "Hollywoodland" sign) is a landmark and American cultural icon located in Los Angeles, California. It is situated on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains. The sign overlooks the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, the historical center of American cinema. "HOLLYWOOD" is spelled out in 45-foot-tall (14 m) and 350-foot-long (110 m) white capital letters. It was originally created as an advertisement for local real estate development in 1923, but garnered increasing recognition after the sign was left up. The sign was a frequent target of pranks and vandalism but has since undergone restoration, including the installation of a security system to deter vandalism. The sign is protected and promoted by the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization. From the ground, the contours of the hills give the sign its "wavy" appearance. Near the famous sign you may catch a glimpse of the ghost of actress Peg Entwistle. She committed suicide by jumping off the famed landmark. It's naturally appeared in tons of movies, like Escape from LA, Demolition Man and more.
This sign is so iconic, it's pretty awesome to see it in person. You can see it from many parts of the city, but I recommend Griffith Observatory as a great vantage point.
Something that you've just got to see if you're ever in L.A. It's not the most impressive thing in the world, but it's so iconic that you can't pass it up. My favorite view is from the Griffith Park Observatory.
There are many great vantage points in LA. Try looking around the city for awesome views. It makes for a great side adventure/road trip game :)
Amazing. Especially at 6am when the sun comes up
In the game Grand Theft Auto V, the Vinewood Sign is clearly an homage to the Hollywood sign. In real-life it's pretty hard to get to. But Hugh Hefner was in talks to buy it.
This one is a bit of a guilty pleasure - cause lets be honest - having seen it so many times in 80's pop culture - its fun to see it up close and personal. We drove through the city trying to find a way to the top without a map. Worth the drive!
This sign is pretty cool, for me to poop on... seriously though, you might step in horse poo if you try to hike to it, being that it's surrounded by trails used by equestrians... you can see it from most parts North of the 10, but since LA is a very polluted city the smog may make it hard to get a good pic.
Yeah, it's pretty hard to get to this sign, but like Larayna said it's a fun little adventure if you can tackle it.
Easy to get to with sat nav and hire car. We went up the residential streets and found a really good spot for a photo!
Hard to get too.
