“A world-class birding area”

This oak-shaded area provides the only campsites available in the Madera Canyon Recreation Area. During the off-season you can usually get a site here without much trouble. However, Madera Canyon is a world-class birding area -- once the incredible variety of birds arrive in early spring and the wildflowers bloom, this small campground becomes crowded. If that’s when you would plan to visit, arrive early on a weekday for the best chance of getting a site. Bog Springs offers some exceptional scenery, either right from your campsite or a short walk away. Many visitors unfamiliar with Arizona will be surprised by the high grasslands that climb the slopes of the Santa Rita Mountains, the thick oak woodlands, and the conifer forest that covers the mountain tops. Three trails leave from the campground to nearby springs and seeps and the small desert oases they feed. At Madera Picnic Area, just a short walk away, there is access to a nature trail, part of which is paved and barrier-free. Within driving distance are over 65 miles of Forest trails that lead into the Mt. Wrightson Wilderness, a mountain bike ride around spectacular Elephant Head Rock, and three scenic drives, one of which visits the Smithsonian's Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory.

We spent two lovely nights at this campground. The sites are well spaced with good picnic tables and views. Ours was pretty level but they were varied so check them all out before deciding. It's quite a ways up from Green Valley so be sure to gas up and shop before coming. We were there in mid March and it snowed overnight. Although there was 2 inches of snow (beautiful!), the roads were clear and we had no problem descending. The trail starting from the lower picnic spot ascends to the amphitheater along the mostly dry stream bed with beautiful views. In the beginning it is paved but then becomes an easy graded dirt path - 3 miles round trip. There are many more trails up into the mountains. Definitely recommend!

The long road into the park and the campground road are paved, as is all the parking for the sites. We have a 23 foot trailer and had no trouble getting into site 6, in spite of the 22 foot recommends max. It seems like a 25 foot could easily get in here as well and use our site or site 7. There are also a coupe others that look big enough, but a vehicle would have to be parked near the restrooms. All sites have a picnic table, fire pit, bear box and tent pad. There are water spigots at each site that actually have threads, so we could have come here with empty tanks. The sites are mostly nicely spaced. The pit toilet was clean. We had 2 bars of ATT LTE or 1 bar of 4G. There is great hiking both from the campground and from the trailhead. However, these are steep and rocky trails (apparently the trail builders had not heard of switchbacks as there are lots he climbs straight up the hill), so if you are looking for an afternoon stroll, these may not be for you.

Only 12 sites, but it did not fill up overnight. Half of the sites are comfortable for rigs longer than the 22' maximum recommended. On a 1/2 mile walk from the campground this morning I came home with great photos of Townsend's Warbler and Elegant Trogan as well as many locally common birds.

We camp frequently with our two dogs, either in a tent or with a teardrop trailer. This site was perfect for both (although the pad wasn't too level, but hey, anyone with a trailer probably has leveling feet or blocks or something). Our dogs were happy on a tie-out that let them roam a little around the site and in the grassy brush that surrounds it. The juniper trees offer a lot of shade - most sites looked nice and shady, although in the summer it will probably get much much sunnier.

Each site has a campfire ring with grill grate, a cement picnic table, and a water pump, although our site's water was back behind a forestry shed behind the site and we didn't find it the first day - it was easy enough to grab a bucket of water from site 10. The sites were all clean and are well-spaced apart. When we drove in, the sign said campsite full, but then there were several open sites that still had "occupied" tags on them from folks who had left already. We grabbed one of those (the folks had left 2 days earlier) and had such a nice time, even though we arrived late on a holiday weekend.

There are two or three amazing hikes right out of the campground - we hiked up to Kent Spring, which was a little over 5 miles round trip and gave us a great picnic spot by a clear stream under some amazing old cypress trees.

This was by far our favorite camping spot in Southern Arizona - easy to get to, beautiful location, and feels really far away from everything even though you can still see the lights of Green Valley in the distance. Oh, two more things: awesome stargazing, and the cleanest vault toilets I've ever seen (again, likely helped by the colder weather, but still - no trash on the floor or spiderwebs, etc).

We went to check this place out before attempting in our MH, so glad we did. There is one spot we could get into with our 40 ft rig and it’s site #7. Only problem with this site is you have to hike around the built up site to get to the picnic table, fire rig etc. but if you don’t mind that it’s a great spot. There are bear food boxes @ each site as well as bear trash at EVERY site, how cool is that. If you have a smaller rig this place would be ideal, we visited on a Wednesday end of February and almost every site was full. There is no electricity or dump but there is water there and it was on which is amazing since there was snow on the ground. Gorgeous place.

Down the road a little ways is the Whipple Observatory which is amazing. It is owned by Smithsonian & Harvard University. This is great for grownups & kids staring sometime between mid-April to mid-May they have guided tours for the top of the mountain daily that leave around 9am till return around 3pm. Not sure if they provide box lunch or you bring your own, but it is truly a experience not be missed. Don’t know the GPS coordinates but it is on mount Hopkins Road just 30 minutes from green valley.

With what we affectionately refer to as our "Geezer Pass" (aka America the Beautiful Senior Pass), the fee is only $5. What a great deal for a beautifully located campground! No hookups of any kind, but there are (OK) pit toilets in the "restrooms" that will suffice. Water is available at a couple of locations from a spigot.
Except for the fact that you have to just get there early and get in (no reservations can be made in advance), we loved this little campground! Arrive mid-morning and you can make a loop around the campground and check the "in-&-out" dates, maybe talk to other campers, and grab a site for the night (or more). The sites are not very level, so be prepared with blocks if you need a level RV. We were in Site #2 (we think), and we had to use several blocks, but it was worth it for the views and the birds. We hiked two pretty tough trails (your choice is steep at the start or steep at the end) on two mornings, and saw the Elegant Trogan in the picnic area not far from the trail start. Also caught a glimpse of him near our site. Beautiful views, not many hikiers around. We loved this place and will be back the next time we're in the area.
Warning: It can be VERY windy at the higher sites where we were. Never were able to put out our awnings.

6/28/19 we camped in our 24ft Salem bumper pull. The roads are paved, as are the camp sites. Bring blocks for leveling. No hook ups, but each site has water and bear proof food storage and trash bins. The weather was great, light showers in the afternoons but the tempature stayed cool at 95 or less with the overnight around 70

Very quite campground up in the Santa Rita MTs . Road in is narrow and winding but very doable. We have 31 ft Winnie and had no trouble. Camp hosts are very nice and helpful people. The campsites and bathrooms are very clean . Definitely would stay here agian.
