Grand Forks Air Force Base (AFB) is a United States Air Force installation in northeastern North Dakota, located north of Emerado and west of Grand Forks. In the 2010 census, the base was counted as a census-designated place with a total population of 2,367, down from 4,832 in 2000. Opened in early 1957, the base's current host unit is the 319th Air Base Wing (319 ABW) assigned to the Expeditionary Center of the Air Mobility Command (AMC). The 319th Air Base Wing is commanded by Colonel Rodney Lewis and the wing Command Chief Master Sergeant is CMSgt Todd R. Krulcik. Schools on base: Nathan Twining Elementary School. During the Cold War, GFAFB was a major installation of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), with B-52 bombers, KC-135 tankers, and Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles.
