Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on May 27, 2023I camped for free within about 10 miles of Grand Canyon Village (South Rim) right next to Lockett Lake in the Kaibab National Forest. Lockett Lake is about 3 miles south of Rt 64 on FR-310 (Coconino Ridge Rd). FR-310 turns south off Rt 64 about 8 miles (not exact) east of the Visitors' Center. I was surprised to find this beautiful, free camping area so close to the Visitors' Center. The turn south on FR-310 off Rt 64 is very well marked and the first 100-foot section is paved, dirt thereafter. FR-310 is flat and easily navigable in just about any vehicle (sedan - SUV - RV). Only concern would be that it can be muddy and slick when snow is present or when the summer monsoon rains come rolling thru. I camped there mid-May and the snow was gone. There are forested camping spots for miles along FR-310. All very nice. Most are flat and vehicle-accessible. Beautiful area. Tall ponderosa pines. Quiet. Very little traffic. No services of any type. I did not have cell service there (Cricket-ATT).

The lake is dried up and there is a sign prohibiting motor vehicle traffic on the road leading to the lake. Only foot, bike, and horse traffic is permitted. There is still free camping along Coconino Rim Road that leads to Lockett Lake.

The road to the lake itself is closed to vehicles. However, there is camping all around it on the 'rim' of the lake off of 310 and 302. Beautiful here. Also, no bugs above the lake. You can hike in and camp near the lake too. Just no vehicles.
