“begin your exploration of the park here”
Near Gatlinburg, TN, Sugarlands Visitor Center is an excellent starting point as you enter the park's North District. Learn about the park's plants and animals with natural history exhibits. Enjoy ranger-led programs conducted seasonally. Peruse the park bookstore and shop. Access public restrooms and drink vending machines. The Backcountry Permit Office is here, too.
Fun little stop with maps, etc and a museum with animals (taxidermy) from Smokey Mountains.
Wasn't very welcoming. It was packed with people when I went (on a weekday in the fall) and most of the official maps and information cost money. Rangers were simply too busy or non-existant.
The park service advertises Great Smoky Mountains National Park as being "free." I would've rather paid an admission fee and had a few small brochures given to me as I entered the park.
