Douglas Creek Bay can be found eight miles down the smoothest gravel road we have ever driven (50+ MPH easily, though we drove slower while towing just to be safe). According to a local camper, this camping area has been maintained since the 1970's with a tree line planted for the wildlife which also makes it feel even more quiet.

The campsites are right up to Lake Sakakawea (locals pronounce it "Sah-kah-kah-way-ah") and you may occasionally be visited by a chipmunk or some geese. There was a mild thunderstorm during our stay and the waves sounded just like the ocean crashing against the shore in front of our rig. So relaxing! If you don't want to be directly on the water there are sites nestled in the trees about 100 feet from the water.

Concrete picnic tables, fire rings, and a vault toilet that is spotless. It even has soaps, shampoos, etc that people have donated. The grass is kept mowed around the sites and they are large enough for any sized rig (we have a 39' fifth wheel).

We stayed here at the end of July for 12 nights and had the place all to ourselves during the week. On the weekends we saw a few more rigs that were spread out around the area. They were respectful of each other and of the grounds (didn't see any trash leftover at all). We couldn't even hear them and only really knew they were there by the smell of their campfires.

We have Verizon and AT&T and both had blazing fast speed unboosted. Hard to believe considering how far from civilization we felt while here!

Views at night are breathtaking! In the summer you can see the Milky Way from horizon to horizon. A small meteor shower in the southern hemisphere put on a great show right on our front porch.

We had some flies that bothered us a few times while here, however a couple of Tiki Torches seemed to do the trick and added to the "deserted island" ambiance. There are endangered birds in the area so if you are a hunter you should probably look elsewhere just to be safe.

The town of Garrison is about 30 minutes away and has a few places to eat, a small supermarket, and a park that has a playground and a pool. Garrison is charming and the locals were friendly (apparently they have a Charles Dickens festival in the winter). The gravel access road is used by the massive farms and we saw huge fields of sunflowers that bloomed while we were here. So pretty!

You have to go further north from the Interstate to get here, however we will definitely be stopping back by again for another peaceful stay.

We found this campground based on a previous Campendium review, and they were spot on! This Corp of Engineer campground is a hidden gem. We basically had the entire place to ourselves except for one weekend, when local residents visited.
The sites all have a beautiful view of the lake. Each site has a picnic table & fire ring. There are vault toilets, which are serviced regularly. The grass is mowed weekly. Dumpsters are available for trash, and emptied regularly. We saw so many birds; pheasant, ducks, geese, pelicans, bald Eagle, etc… Stars were phenomenal!
This is dry camping, but nearby Garrison, has a dump station and great drinking water.
The road to the campground is gravel, but seems to be well maintained.
We had very good cell service, also.
Definitely will visit here again!

No frills sites, though each one has a firepit and a table. There is a south loop by the boat ramp that is wide open, with no trees. We stayed in the north loop which is beside a growth of pine trees, providing afternoon shade. During our time here, we only saw one other camper for one night. There was another trailer here, but it looks abandoned and we never saw anyone at it. Good road into the Recreation Area. Good beach acccess from the north loop for launching kayaks.

Very private and very peaceful. Right on the shores or Douglas bay. There are 19 sites, all with concrete picnic tables. No electric or water hook ups, but three very clean and maintained vault toilets. Just be fully prepared for your dry camping stay as the nearest town is garrison, about 15 miles away, half on dirt roads. Very well maintained with grass mowed consistently and road in graded consistently. VERY few people. we had the place to ourselves during the week. A few locals with fishing and party boats showed up on the week ends with max spaces taken about 10. we overstayed and spent 16 days there. get there on Sunday afternoon or Monday if you want the pick of the spaces. There are tree sites, but we chose open for our solar panels. Loved this place and if we are ba in the area will make it a point to stay again.
