“remote scenery and wildlife”
Tahkenitch Dunes and Threemile Lake Trails begin as one trail then separate about 0.25 mile from the trailhead. Each can be hiked separately or the two trails can be combined into an extended single loop trail of 6.5 miles. This is a popular trail system because of its remoteness, scenery and wildlife. Tahkenitch Dunes Trail: Trail is 2.0 miles one way ending at the beach. Head north through coastal forest and then follow route markers across open dunes which offer a distant view of Tahkenitch Creek. At 1.4 miles, there is a junction with Tahkenitch Creek Trail. Continue west for 0.5 mile to the beach near the creek. Look for signs showing the location of snowy plover nesting areas and please respect these areas from March 15 - September 15. Threemile Lake Trail: Trail is 3.0 miles one way, ending at the beach. Beginning in an old, second-growth conifer forest, vistas along the way provide views of freshwater lakes and the beach. Huge spruce trees and delicate ferns boarder the trail before emerging from the forest above serene Threemile Lake. Slide down the huge sand dune to explore the lake or continue 0.35 mile west to the beach. The lake is home to yellow perch and cutthroat as well as playful river otters. Directions from Reedsport: Follow Highway 101 north for seven miles. The trailhead is at the Tahkenitch Campground, which is just west of the highway.
