Established in 1922 and named after Friend W. Richardson, the 25th governor of California, the park is bisected by Hwy. 101 and the south fork of the Eel River. Camping, hiking, swimming, and just relaxing are popular activities throughout much of the year. Fishing for salmon and steelhead is popular during the winter. Richardson Grove State Park is where you first encounter significant old growth redwood forest when coming north. The 9th tallest coast redwood, a fallen tree ring study conducted in 1933, and a walk-through tree are immediately available.

We stayed here 3 days and it was very nice then 20 people moved into the 2 campsites next to us with yelling and music until 4 AM. The Park rangers refused to enforce the rules or make the people leave so we who were quiet and following the rules had to leave. Very disappointing for a State Park.

Beautiful Sate Park. Last minute stop for us while traveling hwy 101. First come First serve at this time of year but plenty of open sites. Rangers came around several times, seeing if everyone was ok. selling Firewood, etc. Quiet overnight. Beautiful scenery among the grand Redwoods. Stayed in a pull along site with Ford F350 and 30 FT Grand Design Imagine. Had cell service At&T Hotspot, just had to find the right spot
