“a living remembrance of the submarines and veterans lost during WWII”
Seawolf Park is managed by the Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees and offers a three-story pavilion with a view of Galveston harbor, picnic sites, a playground area and a lighted fishing pier. The Park is also home to the American Undersea Warfare Center, which is supported and operated by the Cavalla Historical Foundation. Seawolf Park is a living remembrance of the submarines and veterans lost during the WWII era. It was during the Second World War that submarines comprised less than 2 percent of the U.S. Navy, but sank over 30 percent of Japanese fleet. This includes the sinking of eight aircraft carriers, one of which was sunk by our own USS Cavalla, which is often mistaken for the USS Seawolf, for which the park was named. In fact, during WWII, the U.S. submarine force lost of 52 boats and 3,506 men. Theirs was the highest loss of any division of the U.S. military during WWII.
My boyfriend and I really enjoyed this stop, but we enjoy museum attractions. We really liked reading about all the subs lost during WW2. If you are going to Seawolf for the undersea warfare center the tour is self guided. The day we went it was only my boyfriend and I in the tour area. We found it extremely educational. We also walked around in the park and took in the beautiful day we had. Park entrance to park is $6, that took me by shock because all I had found on the website was the tour price which was $5 each. Overall we had a very pleasant experience.
Additional Comments:
We took this trip early January 5-8.
A park with a decommissioned submarine and a ship? yep this is just about the coolest park in the country.
Very nice park with a pier to fish from, grills to cook with picnic tables, playground area. My children loved going aboard the submarine and ship. You have to pay to enter the park ($6 I think) then there is additional charge to go onto the sub and ship. Nice history lesson.
