Gallup is a town that doesn't have much to recommend it. It's a crossroads community that draws retail customers from a large area but also seems to have a notable number of pan-handlers on street corners and in service stations.
Walmart is conveniently located in the northwest quadrant of the I-40 freeway and the 491 (north) and 602 (south) highways. If you want fast food, there is a Carl's Jr, an Applebee's, and a Cracker Barrel (that didn't appear to have room for RVs) within a couple blocks. Most RVs park along the southern edge of the parking north near the frontage road. Semi's seem to congregate on the west side of the lot. Security made the rounds of the parking lot several times during the night.
Plan to be sweetly serenaded by the sounds of the frontage road, freeway traffic, and train hours. It was the next morning that I realized this Walmart is open 24/7 - I could have refilled my supply of earplugs the night before and slept better. Oh, well.
If you have pets, watch for the goatheads in the grass (at least during the summer) between the frontage road and the parking lot.
I hadn't expected to do a review so I didn't pay much attention to signal strength. Both Verizon and AT&T were decent 4G.
Between the wind and train whistles which seemed blow at least once an hour, it was a pretty sleepless night. I usually sleep well at Wal-Marts...not so here. But I was safe and was not hassled, and I am one who really appreciates Wal-Mart for their RV policy.
Good spot to stop for sleep and supplies. Windy but lots of other rigs to help break it and good cell service.
We spent almost the entire day in this Walmart parking lot fixing our truck camper. Never had any issue with the Walmart staff. A security car was constantly driving the lot. We had a couple beggars walk by asking for money, but they weren’t aggressive. This was one of the busiest Walmart’s I have ever seen so it was noisy all night.
Overall friendly staff, free night stay, and security for safety reassurance = win in my opinion, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.
Got here around 2pm, by six it was a crowded lot. Lots of restaurants and a Starbucks 1.1 miles away. Usual truck noise all night. 22 degrees at 7:30 am glad we ran the heat. Campers also parked in the Home Depot next door.
lots of truckers flowing through. not the largest lot. easy in/out. I had planned to stay at the casino a few miles east, but they barricaded their lot during Covid-19. I tried the Loves but was crazy. Never been to such a small Loves fuel stop. So, back to Walmart I went. It'll do.
A stones throw from the interstate and a very active railroad make this a tough place to get sleep.
Called to make sure it was OK to stay. Friendly staff said just park towards the back near the frontage road. Many trucks parked to one side of the lot, along with several other RVs. Moderate road noise from the highway, but otherwise a normal night.
A very popular spot for both truckers and campers. We got there around 5:30pm and found a spot no problem but a lot of trucks passed by through the night and we noticed tons of other campers parked through out the entire lot. If you have dogs, there’s no good place for them to go to the bathroom at all but there’s an awesome dog park, City of Gallup dog park (I think) about a mile away that we stopped at before hitting the road!
This Walmart is right on the freeway so it is noisy. There is semis but I parked across the parking lot so I didn’t hear them only the freeway.
Positive: security cameras: contracted security company along the city police patrolled the parking lot.
