“delicious mexican one block from route 66”
Jerry’s Cafe is located one block south of Route 66 and similar to other local businesses, it has the look and feel of a bygone era. That includes a neon spangled sign complete with a flashing yellow arrow pointing toward the restaurant. The marquee reads “Mexican American Food,” what New Mexican food was called before New Mexicans determined our cuisine needed to be differentiated from Mexican food. The cafe is tiny, deeper than it is wide and tends to be crowded. It’s not uncommon to wait in line with long queues of prospective diners. Delicious mexican food!
I was disappointed that it wasn't more authentic. Everything was frozen not fresh, the green chili wasn't very good, it was canned refried beans. It was all just sub par. The service was friendly and fast but that was the best part. Outside of the restaurant people were trying to peddle goods. I had the stuffed sopapilla and was just disappointed.
We had our trailer with us and parked a block over at the shop and save store. Streets are narrow so be careful. The good was good and they make their own salsa. Our kids liked it and they are picky eaters. I would eat there again. The staff is attentive and helpful.
Recommend the chili rellanos, whole beans and sopapillas. Good New Mexican food and prices are fair.
