“An atmosphere of elegant simplicity”
Shinzen Japanese Friendship Garden, located within Woodward Park adjacent to Freeway 41, is designed to present an atmosphere of elegant simplicity (shibui) and quiet beauty. Designed by Saito Associates, construction of the Garden began in 1975 and was first opened to the public in May, 1981. The originally flat and dry Valley floor has been transformed with man-made mountains, waterfalls, streams and a lake. The lush plants have turned it into an oasis of distinctive beauty. The design is guided by the original principles of the Japanese garden while incorporating elements of the regional landscape and climate. It is a 5 acre "stroll" garden accenting the four seasons.
As one of the most popular parks in Fresno, Woodward Park has a lot to offer, including the historic Shinzen Friendship Garden. This park is beautiful, and we think a visit to the gardens is one of the best things to do in Fresno!
